Can you lose weight by the Elliptical?

Of course! When I started my weight loss @ 300lbs I would hit the olliptical everyday until I lost a good 40lbs from just that machine I moved on to running. I recommend it to anyone looking to lose weight. IMHO I feel that its hard to tire yourself out on a olliptical compared to any other machine that way if your out of shape you can burn more callories.

I have lost 68 pounds doing a combination of elliptical and strength training. I highly recommend it as it is very easy on the joints. Exercise is hard enough when you are not used to it, this was a good way to break myself in.

Whatever gets you in a caloric deficit works. If that's by controlling your eating, fine. If that's by increasing your exercise by whatever means, that's fine too. Ideally it's a combination of the two.

I've start using elliptical too but I combined it with stationary bike, leg press and leg extention. Can you recommend the strength training that you've done? I kinda hit my plateau right now which made me decided to join this forum.

loosing weight on the elliptical

As everyone else has said---YES-----But.....

Our bodies are amazing and if you continue to do the same type of workout over and over, our bodies adapt to the workout and the workout becomes less effective. So, in order to loose weight effectively, I highly recommend doing a number of different workouts. Not only will this aid in your weight loss goal, but it will prevent exercise burn-out and will reduce the risk of over working the muscles in a repetitive fashion and getting overuse injuries.

Good Luck!

I agree with Pascalevdb. If I don't have a variety of fun activities to do, I just don't do them. One thing that pops into my head is the treadmill. I love the treadmill despite some of its flaws. What I do is I change from the gyms treadmill to my friends apt complex treadmill. The views are completely different. The gym of course is in doors, blah and helps to lose the weight. My friends is the same thing, but the difference is his gym wall is a glass window. This way I can look outside at the apt pool, the birds and bees. Just something to sike your mind. There are tons of other stuff, but you get the point.

Btw, I love the elliptical!

Spending some time reading the stickied threads would be in your best interest...

For your current weight -1200 calories is entirely too low - read the stickied threads to find out why

I dont think its good to jump right into 1 hour of elliptical as a start. You should start small then build it up. I actually started with only 5 mins then slowly went up so I can stay longer on the elliptical without feeling so tired or about to give up.

I have lost weight doing a combination of the elliptical and weight training. I do hiit on a elliptical and I am pretty worn out when I am done. Good Luck!

Of course you can lose weight by using elliptical machine. I think that elliptical machine is better than exercise bike, because you are working with many big muscle groups at same time. This will increase your energy demand and it ill therefore improve you cardiovascular system more than plain walking. It will also burn more fat than more simple workouts. In other words, the more muscles are working at same time, the more fat you are burning and more oxygen is needed. I guess you will reach better results by using elliptical machine than many other machines or gym workouts. Many elite endurance athletes are using elliptical machines during foot injuries. I wish you a good luck.

PrsnlTrainer, it is interesting to see that your clients are using the ellipticals, what do they use if they do not have a foot injury? For example, what cardio do you suggest for the inexperienced client vs the experienced client?

Yes it can burn calories - any exercise can help you lose weight.

However, it depends on how FAST you want to lose that weight.

I am paid by my clients to get fat off them in a short a time as possible, so my methods are biased towards body-transformation that is rapid but of course safe.

So, you will lose some weight with one machine, such as an eliptical, but if you use a mix of strength training and body-weight circuits you will burn the same amoutn of fat probably in 1/3 of the time.

That has been my consistent experience in 8 years of training women to lose fat and get lean and toned.

Hope this makes it a bit clearer.

Good luck!
