Can someone guide me on this?

The situation is that i'm sitting at 170lbs right now. I was 210lbs last summer went down to 160lbs and came up back to 170lbs (went on vacation and then christmas and just slacked off for a few weeks after that to gain that extra 10lbs). Being a 5'9 male, I would like to be at 165lbs and possibly maintain that weight. My question is, to get down to 165lbs, am I eating the right amount of calories with the amount of exercise I'm doing? I'm eating 1800 calories daily; full body strength training 3 times a week and cardio once a week.

By eating 1800 calories? will this allow to me lose that extra 5 pounds (considering the exercise I do) or should I drop this down to 1500 calories?

I did look at the harris benedict formula and it says I can eat almost 2800 calories daily just to keep maintenance but its very very rare that I ever eat that much in a day.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Just need a little guidelines as I'm confused on what to do at this point.

I really don't see any reason for you to go below 1800. Definately not 1500. When did you start this intake? I would think you could probably lose the desired amount in about a month or so, which is plenty fast enough. I don't know about your activity level but 1800 seems pretty low to me for maintenence. If I were you, after I reached my goal I would start increasing my calories each week and seeing what happens. That way you can find what works for your body. As far as exercise, is there a reason you only do cardio once a week?

when I lost the amount of weight that I did (from 210 to 160), I kind of became a skinny fat, so I was trying to put on some muscle slowly by reducing cardio. Not sure if it's the right way to go but if not, i'd be more than happy to hear any input

Listening to Jillian Michael's radio show, she likes to say that the last 10 pounds is a whole different beast than the first 30,40,50 whatever.

She really suggests eating your BMR calories and getting a small deficit just from resistance and interval training. She also recommends a bit higher protein too. Her latest book "Making the Cut" is specifically written for those who are trying to lose that last bit of weight. I'd suggest checking it out of the library.

Good luck!

I can understand wanting to put on muscle. But I don't think it would hurt if you did a bit more cardio, if you wanted to do more. What kind do you do?

At the moment, i'm just on the treadmill for about 45 minutes (running for 5min or so and then walking for 2 min and so on).

2 more days of cardio would probably be an easy fix to the problem. I would still stick to the calorie intake you currently consume.
