Greetings my fellow Scale Junkies!

Name: Neil Thompson
Sex: Male
Age: 27
Height: 6'2
Weight: 142
Frame: Medium
BMR: 1706
Active Level: Sedentary

Hi! I was just wondering a quick question/opinion. Currently i keep myself at 1,500 Calories per day. I spread them out via 5 small meals, heavy in fiber based foods such as Broccoli, apples, and 40-calorie a slice wheat bread. MY protein comes in the AM with egg whites mixed into non-instant oatmeal. I keep my sugar levels (non fructose that is) low, with perhaps a 300 calorie candy bar once a week ( i like Mamba candy! ^.^)

Every morning i do a half an hour of Cardio (Stair running, five flights, 10-12 times as to not let the body get used to a level, by the end i am breathing hard.) And then 100 crunchs and 100 "hundreds". Before bed i do about 6 more Stair runs and 200 Crunchs and 200 "hundreds".

My Goal is to be 140, its a round solid number and a good place to end at. I know its ONLY 2 more pounds, dropping the weight isnt my concern. I was wondering about my intake per day?

1500 isnt alot, but i portion and make use of every trick from slothing Cayenne Pepper on everything to pure ground (no sugar!) cinnamon into my 40-calorie bread, i also take supplements of both.

But long boring rant aside, i know i will need to stay at 1500 calories to maintain my goal weight of 140. Or do i?...

I know the Calculators online are BS! Sure they work, but i was wondering opinions from my fellow scale-heads! Help this brother out! He has breast cancer marathons starting in just a few months!

Sincerly, Mr Neil Thompson ^.^

It really depends. I find that I can eat a couple hundred more calories a day just by refusing to sit down for several hours after I get home from work. Whatever the BMR calculator says is just a starting place. The only way to know for sure would be to eat say 1600 calories a day and see if you gain wait once you get to 140. And if you do, especially if you're still slowly losing... go up to 1700 calories, etc.

Good luck!

Really... you're 6"2....... ... I feel like maybe you should be eating more like 2000 cals. a day.... and you're NOT sedentary.... you have to change that.
...... I also feel.. that you're probably underweight... I just looked at a few charts, and NONE of them were under 150 at the low end.
According to your height of 6' 2" your ideal healthy weight is 174 pounds. Your recommended weight range is between 155 and 194 pounds.

This was calculated using Hamwi formula, a simple formula commonly used by many clinicians.

Jeanette had a very good point, the BMR calculators are just a starting point. You have to adjust your daily intake based on whether or not you are getting toward your goals or not.

Based solely on the fact that you're 6'2, you should be eating more that 1500 cals in a day. The current ACSM recommendation is that males should never eat below 1800 cals in a day. Plus you said you've got marathons coming up? If you're training for marathons, you NEED more that 1500 cals in a day.

I just looked it up on a couple of different sites and running just the marathon alone, you should burn around 2400 to 2600 cals based on your current weight. That's obviously not including training.

The very general guideline was 100 cals per mile burned for a 150 lb person. You'll also need to base your daily intake on how many miles you're training. Here's a good tip that I found:

"A marathon runner who needs to lose weight can do so more easily than an inactive person. Running 50 miles a week burns an extra 700 calories a day. This runner can eat 200 calories per day more than an inactive person (not dieting) and still have a daily 500 calorie deficit. That's losing about a pound a week, while still eating fairly heartily. This runner can eat an extra 500 calories a day and still lose a pound every 18 days - about 1/3 of a pound a week."

I think I missed the height, I'm trying not to be depressed that someone who's 10 inches taller than I am weighs more than 10 lbs less and still wants to lose, lol!

Monster brings up a good point though - is there a reason to hit 140 other than that it's a nice round number? Do you feel like you're flabby? Is it for the marathon running?

If you actually train for marathons regularly then you can definitely eat more than 1500 calories.

PLB - a question! Is the hundred calories burned per mile in addition to BMR, or including? I know exercise machines show you 'including' your BMR to make it seem like you're doing more :p Haven't really been sure on the numbers for running!

... Reading this reminds me that it will soon be lunch time for me, and I'm hungry! :)

Jeanette - good question. it looks as though that rough calculation is to determine the net calories burned, meaning not including BMR. Here's a slightly better calculation from the livestrong website:

"For the total calories burned per mile, including the resting metabolic rate, use the equation (0.75 times body weight in pounds). For only the net calories burned per mile, use the equation (0.63 times body weight in pounds)."

Keep in mind these are VERY rough estimates, more to make a point about the necessity for increased daily caloric intake when training for marathons, rather than something to be followed as a strict guideline.

Here's a bit more info about marathon running and caloric needs from the livestrong site:

Yah, I think just about all calorie information is a ballpark figure that varies by individual. Thanks for the info!
