Can I brag for a moment?

I've been training to run a 10k (I'm 36 and although I work out and bike ride have never run anywhere at anytime in my life). Usually I run 3.5 miles on teh treadmill or 3 miles on the trail.

Well, the 10k is 4/29 and after training since January I realized that my husband & I have a major conflict on 4/29. We're trying to work it out, but there is another local 10,000 run on 4/2 (next weekend).

I was thinking that if I couldn't work out our date conflict, I might run the 10,000, but I had never run 6 miles ever before.

Yesterday morning I ran 6.1 miles on the treadmill (just to prove I could) then afterwork, I had my standing Thursday training date, and ran 3 miles on the trail.

I ran 9 miles in one day!

That is frickin' amazing for me and although did have some soreness last night, I feel really alright this morning (although I skipped the gym:( )

I am a bad running mo-fo!

That's awesome! Congratulations!! I'm trying to train for a far less lofty goal. Actually, I've resolved to start training today. I'm trying to run a 5K race on Memorial Day. I would love to know how you worked to get yourself ready for your race. It sounds like you know a thing or two! Again, congratulations!

I actually got very lucky. My office (state government) has a Wellness Program which encourages people to get active. One of my co-irkers, who is an aerobics instructor (and is in amazing 0 body fat-type shape) volunteered to train (2 days a week) a group of us to run the 10k which is our office goal.

With people counting on you and encouraging you, it's just easier to show up and give it your all. On the off days, I would either do the elliptical of do 3 miles on the treadmill (along with some weight training).

What he had us doing was first power walking for 5 minutes jogging for one, then increasing the jogging time until we were jogging for about 12 minutes and walking 3, then yesterday he said we are running the whole way.

There were a few times there I (really) wanted to take a walk break, but he wasn't stopping, so I didn't stop. And son-ofa-gun me and another gal were able to run the whole thing with our trainer.

I also work for a State Agency that has a wellness program. It's nice because we get basically a free half hour if we chose to do something healthy during our lunch break. Right now the campaign is 100 miles in 100 days. I'm signed up for that, so that is just another motivator not to skip a workout. However, that's not very hard to do.

I like to workout with people who are in better shape than I am because it forces me to push myself harder to keep up with them. I wish there was someone like your trainer in my office. However, once the weather starts to get warmer, a co-worker and myself are going to start hiking during our lunch break. It's all uphill one way and down hill on the way back. Of course, we'll have to cut our hikes short, but it's a pretty steep hill, so I'm sure that will help.

Do you set an incline on the treadmill or elliptical? If so, what do you usually set it at? The course I want to run is uphill 2/3 of the way and downhill the rest. The inclines vary. The middle part of the course is the hardest. It's one of those hills that doesn't look too hard, but it's a killer. I can do 3 miles on the treadmill (incline at 2) and elliptical (incline at 11) in 30 minutes, but that kind of time isn't even going to put me anywhere near most of the racers and I'm afraid the incline I use now isn't even close to what the course is.

I set the treadmill incline at 1.5%, the elliptical I set at 14, but ellipticals are all so different 14 on mine mihgt be 6 on yours.

I find that kicking up the resistance on the elliptical does more for my workout than the incline.
