Can a straight guy get away with wearing leather pants?

One my weight loss goal was to get thin enough so I could buy a pair of cool leather pants, and look like a rock star or something when I go out.
HOWEVER... one of my very best friends (who is a woman) told me that only gay men wear leather pants, and I would be perceived as being gay.
Disclaimer: I'm fine with gay people. It's just not the image I want to portray when I'm out with friends. Women wear makeup, straight men do not, etc, etc.
Gay men tend to wear thing that straight men don't.
Anyway.
What is the general consensus out there.
Is wearing leather pants fine for straight men to do?

If this is what you want then don't worry about what other people think. Who's right is it to tell you that a clothing item will make you look like anything at all. It's only your right. Who cares what other people think. They are your goal pants? Then get them and keep that motivation to fit in them one day! Sounds like you think it will be cool. Go for it!

I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong. It's how I'm viewed by society.
If my goal were to wear lipstick, eyeliner, and mascara, high heeled pumps and whatever else you women wear on your faces, I would obviously viewed as being gay, even if I'm as straight as drag racing strip.
I'm overweight, and 38 years old and I've been out of social scene for a good while now, partially because of my divorce, and partially because of my negative view of myself.
So please, if you know, how do you think society views men who wear leather pants?
Thanks.

I don't know where you live, so I am not sure if things are different there, but where I come from, leather pants are no indication of your sexual orientation, and certainly not a sign that you're gay. Don't know where your friend has that bit of info from.

Just checked back with some gay friends of mine - who thought the question was hilarious by the way.

The answer: "Well, I wouldn't want to be caught dead in a pair of leathers, but to each their own. Unless you've got an arse like Marcus Schenkenberg, in which case.....be my guest!"

Guess the answer translates into, at least for this part of the world, 'Yes, it's fine for a straight guy to wear leather pants.'

Emerald is right though. Who cares? If you want to wear them, wear them. A single piece of clothing is not going to say anything about your sexual orientation or make you 'look gay'. There's a little more to it than that.

Unless you decide to wear a pink ballet tutu and sing 'I will survive' on the top of your lungs in front of your local supermarket....but that's an entirely different story.....;)

I just thought they would be cool. Jim Morrison is one of my favorite rock legends, and wore leather pants quite often.
Also, Dwayne Wayans wore them in "The Last Boyscout" and you hear a funny conversation come out of it.
I'm concerned because I don't want to drop a ton of cash for something I'm not going to wear!
Thanks for the input.

This is strictly my opinion - I do not think they are in style anymore and if I saw someone wearing them I would probably think it was a joke or a really really special occasion for the person and they dug them out of their closet.
I don't even really think it's ok for women to wear them (unless they are dressing up for an 80's party) - just my taste though.

I think it depends on what you wear with them to be honest. I wear leather pants on a regular basis, but I wear them like other people wear jeans. Loads of people I know do. It's not a 'fashion' thing, to me leather pants are just another way of covering my backside up.

They used to be a 'fashion statement', nowadays they're just....well....pants.

I agree with San. I don't have any myself but I think leather pants can be worn just as well as wearing denim.
Monster, seriously, if you think they are cool...get them.

Just speaking from the heart here...

You could say the same thing about leather pants.

Wearing leather pants does not make one gay. But, it certainly makes it look that way. Just think of it this way - if a girl wears a low cut shirt that reveals 90% of her chest, a short tight miniskirt, high heeled boots and lots of makeup, does that mean she's a slut? No, not necessarily. But, she would certainly LOOK like one.

But, no matter what - wear what you want, dude. Who cares what other people think? If they don't like your Twisted Sister leather pants, they can go F themselves in the A with a big black D.

I think it's all a matter of attitude while wearing them. If you look relaxed and confident and don't look like you're super aware that you're wearing leather pants (although if you look awesome in them, no reason not to let that shine through) you'll be fine. If you feel awkward and self-conscious I can't say that you'd look gay (leather pants have never meant gay where I'm at) but it might not be the rock star vibe you're going for.

I think the cut of the pant may also matter. If you have shiny metallic stars or something on them... or if you're wearing biker style looking pants and don't have a motorcycle...

I wouldn't really know since I've been raised not to put people in obvious prejudice and stereotypical boxes, also... I'd say, and I do apologize for being snarky, if you have the balls to wear the clothes you feel like, then go wear it, if not... I think leather pants might be hard to pull of.

Well,... thanks for you all of your comments. As you can see I live in Ohio.
Remember the movie... "Heathers" ?
They put Perrier water in the hands of the dead football player to make it seem like they were gay. It was supposed to have taken place in Ohio.
Yes, there's some bad attitudes out there. *I'm just trying to get a general consensus.*
Thanks your input, people.

After some deliberation, WITHOUT coming to any sort of definite conclusion. (I'm quite a way off from my final goal anyway). I think I decided that I can wear leather pants, on APPROPRIATE OCCASIONS, (like going out!) and not have to worry about being perceived as being less than manly. I'm a solidly built guy, I keep my hair fairly short, and I think I'll be fine.
I THINK that the answer is along the lines of "Can a man still look masculine while wearing a pink shirt". Of course, but you have to do it right.
Thanks again. Please feel free to continue with your thoughts.

"I love my dead gay son!" haha that's all I remember from Heathers. And yes, it is a matter of how you wear it. I think pink shirts are pretty nice, but only if they're button-up and you're tall, handsome, and well groomed etc.

If you wear a normal pink shirt and look like a raggamuffin it doesn't look so nice :-/

I don't think anyone over 30 should wear leather pants. Ever. Even with a butt like Brad Pitts. But that's just my opinion. I think I'd feel sorry for an older guy wearing leather pants :/ In a kind of..trying too hard to look cool, kinda way?

I sound like a mahoosive bitch but yeah, you wanted honest opinions.

haha. Maybe I can get sympathy points from the womenz?

Seriously, ever watch "The Last Boyscout" ? Damon Wayans wears a pair of pretty normal looking NON rock starish leather pants. I think I could get away with that.
But, like I said... it's still months away.

Does the age really matter? o_O

I mean, are you going to tell people over 35 that they shouldn't wear jeans either? How would you know how old peeps are anyway?

I really don't understand what age has to do with what kind of pants people wear. I know 60 year olds which look cool in leathers, and 20 year olds who look like retards in them. Not everybody who wears leather pants wants to be 'cool'. For some, they are just pants. Not everybody sees clothes as a 'status symbol'.

P.S.: Somebody over 30 would be 'an older guy'??? Sheesh....best go and choose my coffin I guess. Oh wait....got to wait for my carer to change my diapers first.

I don't really understand why you're arguing this. I simply gave my opinion :)
And that's all it is.

I don't think I made something clear though--an "older" guy isn't anyone over 30 but I saw that Monster said he was 38 and I would class that as an "older" guy (again, Monster, sorry!!) I'm sure many wouldn't do the same, but like I said..my opinion. I'm glad you know 60 year olds that look good in leathers; I don't.
I don't think they look good on anyone (unless you're Uma Thurman :drool5:). I'm not saying everyone sees them as a "status symbol" or that everyone wearing them want to look "cool". I'm just saying I think that's how I'd feel if I saw a 38 year old guy wearing them.

And no, jeans and leather pants are completely different to me. Where I live, and in my circle of friends, all of us wear jeans and none of us wear leather pants. Maybe it is different for you. That's the beauty of giving someone several different opinions!

Haha, I've totally seen that film! Still think they look rubbish on him too ;) Maybe you could change my mind! I've only ever seen guys wearing them so tight I can see the outline of...well...everything!

Edit: Monster, I see your picture and I raise you! Check your mail!

Well... here they aren't tight. If you don't like them.. then I guess you just don't like them. But to me, those pants look good, and masculine.
