On a packet of cous cous I have

calories in whole packet - 300
calories per serving (when prepared with water and no butter/ oil) - 166

There are 2 servings in the pack. This makes no sense to me?

Sometimes there are discrepancies, but really.... it's only 16 calories different. While not exact, it should still give you a decent idea of what you're eating.

I would guess it has to do with the testing methods the company used for determining the calories in the prouct. There are different ways, and the testing methods have degrees of error. In this case, there is about a 5% difference in cooked vs. un-cooked, I would guess this falls in the acceptable range for calories in the product.

Personally, when I am counting calories, I add a +/- 10% to the end of the day total, just to account for errors in my own counting ability. Monster is right though, you should not be concerned with the 16 calorie difference

I think it's the 'servings: about 2'. Which means not exactly two. Sounds like it's just under. The whole reporting of serving sizes is pretty odd on packages, but my guess is that somehow the packet is like... 100g and the serving is 56g or something like that.
