Sport Calories for kids

I'm doing a two week lesson on children eating healthy, we have covered all different types of topics. I couldent find information that mentions how many calories children should eat. I'm working with 11 and 12 yr olds. Any suggestions?

Maybe this link. It popped up as the second link on google. The first was WebMD.

I would assume any of the calorie counters out there that aske for age, sex and weight would be good. Hopefully they will take into account kids and what they need for development.

That's interesting, cause kids are growing so fast I would think caloric intake would be ever changing. Personally I think if a kids is eating healthy, that caloric intake isn't something they should be very concerned about...(within reason).

All of us have such different bodies, everyones body, metabolism, and needs are so different in an individual basis....it's hard to come up with a "number" for that.

That said, I found this for you: :D

Less than they're eating now ;)

Just about 70% of America is overweight now (>34% are obese and ~32% overweight), I believe, and over 80% of overweight children remain that way as adults. Sorry, I just wrote a paper on something regarding this. I know it doesn't help your question.

I'd say if the kids are eating HEALTHY food (not mac n cheese, hot dogs or fast food) and are exercising, they should be ok.

the lack of both of these is why our kids are so obese. when I was a kid, I was the only slightly chubby kid through all of elementary school and most of middle school.

now it looks like half the kids I see that age have the same spare tire I carried, even the girls!

Honestly, I don't think they "do" as much as we did as kids. It' seem like they are so lazy! I can say I didn't always eat healthy as a kid, but I was ALWAYS out doing stuff.....

Exactly. Parents let kids sit in front of the tv and play video games rather then go outside and play. I remember day my mother would lock us out of the house so that we had to play.

Just to be clear, she didn't actually lock us out...she just made us play outside and not sit in front of the tv. Rainy days were for indoor games and tv time

yeah, I know what you mean :)

We were *always* outside running around playing..lol I came in to eat :eating: and sleep :sleeping2: basically! LOL

Yes, I think if we concentrate on eating nutrient-dense foods, instead of calorie-dense ones, the actual amount of food we eat will regulate itself correctly, more or less.

You would be suprised how much some kids do, many of them are involved in sports after school, in multipul teams. I'm not saying they all play every day. But i have some kids that are actually anti video game. They want to go out and play. I've seen this trend grow (in my own classes) over the last few years, it is a great sign, especially since 1/3 of all kids are overweight.

yeah, Nintendo didn't even come out until I was in...3rd or 4th grade. and computers were not game consoles to a large degree.

no digital satellite TV or DVD's or Internet either. we had to make our own fun by riding bikes, skating, or just chasing each other all day with toy guns.

it was a different time back them too, i can go on and on. Either way , thanks for the links and ideas, it is going well so far. We have come up with some of our own class ideas about eating healthy.

If the lesson is "to children" you should not mention caloric intake, in terms of daily requirements because kids that young should not be focusing on the caloric intake. If the lesson is to the parents, it will depend on the size and eating habits of the child.

I believe the lessons were a success. It created awareness in the children. We didnt end up talking about calories in the end, but we discussed a wide range of topics. You wouldnet believe how many kids were bringing in nutritional labels and asking questions about them. It was good, thanks for your help.

Good for you. That was a great service to your community.
