Weight-Loss

Ok. So I was wondering how many calories it takes to keep the average human alive each day. I thought I remembered hearing it was 1400 or something.
Whatever that number is I need to eat under it in order to lose weight as I haven't been getting much exercise lately.

Sorry for making a topic just for this.

Look around here(Tools section) for a calorie counter, and that's a good start.
1400 is very low, even if you're after weight loss.

It is? Wow. Well I've been eating less than 700 calories a day for the past week. Some days less than that. Yesterday I only had 200 or so.

Thanks, I'll go look for the calorie counter in the tools section.

Yes that is not enough at all. I recommend finding a tool that tells you how many calories a day you need to maintain your weight, and subtract 300-500 from that number. If you do that and exercise often, you'll see major results in no time.

Good luck!

I can't even see how you can eat 200kcal in the first place to be honest, my breakfast is about 500kcal at the very least.
Educate yourself, there are so many ignorant dieters out there that will tell you crap like this ;)

What's so dangerous about it exactly? As long as I have fat and muscle for my body to take calories from my body should be fine right?
And the less I eat the more weight I lose right?

Eating less than 1000 calories/day is starving yourself. That's what is dangerous about it. You could permanently damage vital organs if you keep it up.

No... Actually, the less you eat doesn't mean the more weight you lose, or more specifically, fat, as some of the weight will also be muscle lost, which will later hamper fat loss.
I'm losing just under 2lbs a week on a 2500kcal diet...

I lost weight in February perfectly well with a 2,200 kcal per day cut! 200 per day? Imagine how that would waste the muscles - including the one in the chest that circulates the blood. "The most common reason for death amongst those with anorexia is heart failure".

Wow. I didn't realize that eating so little was damaging my vital organs.
I guess I'd better go eat right now. I've only had 310 calories to eat so far today.

Edit: Ok so I went and ate. I stuffed myself infact. Hearing about that heart thing sent me into a bit of a panic.
Now I've had around 1380 calories today(I've been writing down the amount of calories I eat each day for the past few weeks).
First 310: Lasagna TV diner
And just now: 2 cupcakes, a 370 calorie tv diner, 2/3 of a pack of peanut butter crackers and two glasses of milk.
That should be good enough right?

I don't see how anyone could lose weight on 2500 calories day unless they do nothing but exercise all day long. I hardly ever eat more than 2500 in a day. Ever. Maybe on rare occasions like Thanksgiving holiday or something. But then again I've only just started calorie counting so serious lately.
I must have a really slow metabolism.

Your problem is you're doing it all wrong...
Now, we've all been overweight so our metabolisms can't have been that good, but through training and nutrition/timing we've upped them on a daily basis...

Eating often, 2-3hours is reccomended, I sometimes try 90mins.
High intensity training(On a full stomach) Be it weights or HIIT (Earlier in the day is best)
Caffeine :D

I only trained for 30 mins today, probably take in around 2000-2200kcal, and I'm expecting to lose on that... It seems like alot, especially to lose weight, but somehow it works.

If you don't mind me asking, Chernabog, what are your stats? age? weight? height?

Eating that low amount of calories isn't going to hurt your heart from a couple days. Anorexics die because they do that to themselves for years. The main thing that eating that low will do is it will lower your metabolism. Your body will adjust to only burn as many calories as you take in, so when you stop dieting and increase your calories, you will gain all the weight back and more. That's what usually happens to dieters. You have to know how to play with your calories and help ease your body along as you lower the calories and later up them. Needless to say, you need at least 1000 calories a day, your body really can't function fully with less than that.

You don't have to be "super-thin" to be an anorexic. If you're starving yourself, you're considered an anorexic regardless of your BMI. It sounds to me like you're looking for a quick-fix diet. You're eating so little that your brain and body will be impaired, and you're more likely to binge. If I were you I would up the calorie intake to ATLEAST 800 cals a day OR 200-300 more. The thing is, you should be getting these calories from good sources-not junk food and tv dinners. Fill up on fruit, protein, fiber, and complex carbs. Foods like oatmeal, oranges, apples, bananas, smoothies, whole wheat bread, lowfat/nonfat yogurt, etc. This combined with exercise will set you an a more steady and happier path to weight loss the healthy way.

I am your height, and I started about 10 lbs and three months ago. I am losing a pound every week or so. It is slow but the progress I am seeing is in INCHES. And I've been eating between 1600-2200 cals per day, with about 30 mins of exercize a day (mostly light to moderate, some heavy.)

Take your current weight and multiply by 15. That's the amount of calories it would take to maintain your current weight.

That's 2520.

So, assuming you wanted to lose a pound a week, which is a healthy goal, you would reduce your cals by 250 a day, and burn 250 a day over your normal activity (say, by walking hard, stationary bike, a bike ride, extra stairs, whatever.)

That would mean you would need to eat (right now) between 2000 - 2200 cals per day, plus your exercize, in order to lose a pound a week.

Of course, this needs adjusting as you go.

But it is a good start.

Think SLOW weight loss. Food is energy. Starvation doesn't work.

Your body would burn about 2,500 calories a day, just living, walking around, showering, etc. That's without exercise. Eat around 2,000 calories a day, you could lose a pound a week. Without exercise.

I've heard they give comatose patients 1,000 a day just to survive, and believe me, they aren't doing anything. LOL! You need to keep your body functioning!

Indigoiis beat me to it. :rotflmao:
