So, when I see on a label, say,

Calories: 590
Calories from fat: 198

Is the total number of calories I'm consuming 590, or (calories)590+(calories from fat)198?

Total number is 580 or whatever, and 198 of those are from fat.

Our calories are supplied by Proteins, Fat and Carbohydrates.
because we care so much about fat, they make that "Calories from fat" statement so you can make smart choices in terms of fat since MOST PEOPLE DONT KNOW HOW TO CALCULATE IT FOR THEMSELVES. so they did the work for you

so the total (calories) is 580, 198 of which are supplied by fats... the remainder is either carb or protein (lol i love to chat eeh)

tip: i hear they say to eat no more than 15 cal from fat per 100. so if you eat something with 600 cal it should have more than 90 cal from fat. by this rule, tat meal u just ate is too high in fat!!! lol

Something else useful to remember is that
1g of fat = 9 cals
1g of carb = 4 cals
1g of protein = 4 cals (but has a thermogenic effect which makes it a little less than 4 in the end)

so 198 calories from fat = 198 / 9 = 22g of fat
