Calf pain, new shoes, stretching

Hi all

I'm new to the forums. I've been working out now for about 3 weeks, the last 2 weeks have been consistent doing 6 days a week.

I started out walking 30 minutes on my treadmill, I would do a little bit of stretching before my work out. I have to be honest, I haven't done a lot
of stretching. I do some resistance training, then a bit of stretching, then I get on the treadmill.
The 2nd week (still using my old shoes) I wanted to add some jogging, so I would walk 4 minutes, jog for a minute. The 3rd week I wanted
to bump it up to 1 1/2 minutes of jogging after 3 1/2 minutes of walking. Problem is I get some pretty bad calf pain, not bad enough it would make me fall, but fairly
noticeable and only in my left side.

I figured it could be from my old shoes, so I bought new shoes the other day. Tried the first pair today and the pain was worse.
The weird thing is, I can increase the incline to about 50% and walk backwards on the treadmill and the pain goes away. It's really frustrating!

Is it because of my lack of stretching? I'm going to try my 2nd pair of shoes tomorrow (store had a great deal so I bought the 2nd pair for a dollar).
They told me I could try the shoes, if they didn't work well for me I could return and try something else.

Thanks for any help

your shoes need to be correctly matched to your feet. Do you suffer from pronation or supination ? were your new shoes fitted or purchased of the rack ?

take a look at the wear pattern on the bottom of your old shoes, that will help determine which way your foot rolls.

with your stretching, remember to only stretch once the muscles are warm and stretch both calf muscles (Gastrocnemius and soleus) in each leg.

Thank you for responding, appreciate it. I should have tried my 2nd pair before I posted, I was really frustrated since I had so
much pain from the first pair.
Tried the 2nd pair yesterday and what a HUGE difference. It was like jogging on a cloud, pretty much zero pain. I was super
happy after my workout.

My old shoes are just old as in age, not wear. I checked the bottom and there was no wear....we can keep that between you and me
because the hubby said I didn't need new shoes. ;) I only used them for walking in the past, never jogged with them.

Thanks again
