i heard that caffeine isn't that good for you... speeds up your metabolism a little but ultimately doesn't do anything for weight loss

also ups insulin resistence making you gain weight or something.. or that's what i heard

i'm not a big caffeine drinker but i drink sugar free energy drinks sometimes... maybe 2 or 3 a week, is this bad and will it foil my attempts to lose weight ?

they dont make me crave sweets like i heard they do... so i dont overeat because of them so that doesnt have anything to do w/ it, so is 2 or 3 energy drinks (20 cals a can) ok?
 
I've actually been wondering about this, too, since I used to do the same thing. I stopped after a while because I was afraid that the aspartame would make me store fat more easily.

Is this just a myth or what?
 
As far as weight loss goes, no, thats 40-60 calories a week!!! No biggie.

I use to drink alot of diet sodas at the begining of my diet, and it didn't hinder my progress. If artificial sweetners do infact trigger fat storage, it shouldn't impact weight loss. If your on a calorie deficit, then that store fat will be used up.
 
And caffeine has the ability to increase the mobilization of fat deposits, it is safe and good for the fat loss purpose!
 
I thought that it was so minimal that it was insignificant?

I know for a fact that caffeine doesn't make me feel awake, revved, or anything. In fact I've become drowsy right after drinking caffeine numerous times. I used to think that it would speed up my metabolism, but over time I got more and more used to the effects of caffeine that now, not even a large amount makes me feel any different.
 
Most people, from a lifetime of soda, coffee, tea, chocolate, etc. have more or less developed quite a tolerance to the stimulant effects of caffeine. This explains why people who drink soda and coffee tend to increase their consumption over time. Regardless, the metabolic effects of caffeine ingestion are so minimal based on the standard dosage we receive that it is barely worth mentioning.

As a long time coffee and diet soda drinker who gave up caffeine cold turkey (sometimes I'll drink some iced tea but usually opt for herbal iced teas), I swear going off caffeine was the best thing for me. I still get my coffee mix (just replaced with decaf) and I lost my craving for diet soda (once in awhile I'll have a caffeine-free diet root beer). I've replaced it with sparkling waters and light/low cal. fruit juice mixed together (so GOOD) or the SF lemonade etc.

At first, it was hard going off caffeine but when I do drink a little caffeine (like iced tea), it makes me feel sick now. I don't even crave diet soda anymore and I used to drink way too much of it.

I've heard that aspartame is bad as well (but more for brain issues and tumors etc). My sister who is a doctor wrote a paper about the effects off caffeine (directed towards coffee) and it's all about moderation. There is a lot of controversy, especially with women's health and caffeine.

At 36, I thought I wanted to help increase my longevity a bit and also was having horrible bouts of insomnia and didn't feel that great (even though I eat really healthy, take yoga and pilates etc. )

I think it's all about moderation and your own personal preference. Personally, I feel a lot better off caffeine now.
It's really helped me a lot.
 
I just saw an article about this on Mayo Clinic's website. The summary is: Yes it can help a little but not too significantly.


A few studies indicate that caffeine may slightly enhance weight loss in people who exercise and maintain a low-fat diet. But there's no evidence that increased caffeine intake results in significant or permanent weight loss.

Marketers of fad diets and weight-loss supplements often exaggerate the benefits of caffeine, claiming that caffeine will significantly curb your appetite and help you drop pounds quickly. However, clinical studies on the relationship between caffeine and weight loss don't support these claims.

Here's what researchers have found:

* Caffeine may act as an appetite suppressant. However, while studies have shown that some people eat less after consuming caffeine, this effect is brief — not long enough to lead to significant weight loss.
* Caffeine may increase your body's ability to burn calories. Caffeine is thought to stimulate thermogenesis — one way your body generates heat and energy from digesting food. However, caffeine's role in thermogenesis probably isn't enough to result in significant weight loss.

Mmm coffee. I just love the taste and need it to get through my morning classes at the moment. Hopefully I can get off it this summer though, and I can see if I feel any better or lose weight any slower. Hopefully getting more sleep and drinking less coffee will balance out each others' effects.
 
I only started drinking coffee recently (despite the fact my dad owns about 60 coffee shops) but before coffee I used to take shots of ginseng which is supposed to give energy. I dont know what the science of this is but it helped me for a while (I think I may have built up an immunity because I was taking it so much). Ill see if I can get the research my dad has on coffee pros and cons. He has a little bit on energy drinks because he is developing one right now but I dont think he has enough to post yet. Id go with Wiki on energy drinks pros and cons.

I was a heavy caffine drinker (3-5 mr dews a day) and i cany say it helped me lose, but the high fructose corn syrup screwed me:banghead:

I to quit too, cold turkey it was hard, but now i feel great, drinking LOTS more water, it was the first thing i did, on my path to a better life:lurk5:

I drink quite a bit of coffee, some days I'll have 2 or 3 cups, black, other days I won't have any. I'd say in an average week, it balances itself out to about 8oz per day. As far as insulin resistence and making you gain weight, I've consistently loss between 2 and 3 pounds every week since I've been dieting. I started eating between 1600-1800 calories at the beginning of February and I've dropped from 305 to 248 since then.

Mind you, this is all anecdotal. I'm sure caffeine affects everyone differentlly and it's possible that I could be the exception.

I stopped drinking caffeine regularly awhile back, but even when I did drink it- I didn't see it hindering my weight loss, now when I drink it I stay up for like 30+ hours straight- which happened this week when I decided "oh one diet whatever won't hurt!" .... I think I will pass now, just because I like being able to sleep :D
