C.L.A- what are the general thoughts on it?

I've seen a suppliment called CLA which suggests it helps when exercising to reduce the cortisol production in the body which naturally arrive with cardio exercise or stress.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? is it worth buying or taking? are there any risks? it seems too good to be true and I just wondered if anyone else out there had any further ideas?

It used to be more popular, but this is the first time I've heard it mentioned in probably 4 years.

While it can help with fat loss (I don't think it helps with cortisol at all), its not a make-or-break supplement, and its not going to be a significant increase in fat loss.

Eggs contain CLA and the cooking process doesn't destroy it.

here's the wiki on it: Conjugated linoleic acid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thanks for that- I wasn't aware it was as old as it is! (I mean market wise) I just saw it on offer as a new product and know that for me, I have an irrational amount of belly fat. Its out of proportion with the rest of my body so much so I get pregnacy questions and gym instructors ask me if I should be working out "in your condition".

I since found out that as I do alot of cardio I could be causing my body to lay more fat around my middle due to the cortisol my cardio exercise creates. I was hoping the CLA would help calm down the cortisol somewhat but if its not so good at doing that then I guess its not for me. I want to lose weight but am reluctant to believe pills can do this for me! It's the cortisol I wanted to deal with.

Thanks again.

The interesting thing about cortisol is that while it does do a lot of negative things, at the same time its also triggering other things to begin. Its sort of a yin and yang thing...can't really have balance if everything is only 'the good stuff'. You need a little 'bad stuff' sometimes.

That said, what if its not the cardio? Are you doing more than an hour of cardio? Are you stressed or anxious about other aspects of life? (getting all the bills paid, college classes, children's performance in school, etc)

Look at those kinds of things as possible cortisol stimulation points...anything more than mild stress is detrimental to mental and physical health (not to mention emotional).

Also, CLA isn't expensive, and its not dangerous, so if its easily within your budget you could try it for a month without changing anything else and see what it does for you. Everyone is different and responds to a different degree to the supplements that have been shown to do something, and sometimes the placebo effect even contributes to getting us past stagnation.

I have been given a months supply of CLA so will continue to try it- have heard it can increase the chances of becomming diabetic but hopefully not in every case!

I do have alot of stress- I have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. I do about 8-10 hours of cardio a week across 5 days. (I also do stretching and weights on top of that) Its a bit of an obsession which I'm working on trying to cut down but then the anxiety (about my weight) kicks in and .... I used to do Yoga 5 times a week but I just don't seem to have the spare time at the moment. Even back then my stomach was an issue with new yoga teachers always pulling me aside and asking if this was "OK for me right now"! I also hated the mirrors in the yoga studio.

My stomach is just so huge- its actually a whole 2 dress sizes bigger then the rest of my body on a good day, which being that I'm at the gym so often is a big embarassment! My GP has sent me to a gastreoentreologist (after sending me for numerous scans as she was so sure I was pregnant or had some sort of growth) a personal trainer said he was sure it was not fat and actually bloating or bad digestion. I tried charcole pills (for the bloating) and various other remedies (peppermint tea, OTC pills for gas: simetone, windease, deflatine, pepsin acid (HCL) pills for digestion and did each for at least a month with nothing helping so in my mind it has to be fat or it would have been affected by one of those (can't think of anything else to try).

Anyway, I'll give it a go, pack says it should make a difference within one month...
