Busy

I'm too busy to go to the gym or attend a class because I have far, far too much work to do.

I mean sure I take breaks while I'm doing it but it's like 30 mins and by the time I've donned my sportswear and walked to the gym there goes 20 of those minutes.

I have very little exercise equipment at home but I really need to start working out I feel lazy and so unfit.

Any ideas or tips?!

Thanks xx

Sure.

I don't mean to sound rude, but maybe you should spend some time prioritizing your life.

You basically say you don't feel good about yourself physically, but don't have time to exercise.

That means you MUST buy "at home" equipment if you are going to adhere.

However, I just don't buy that "too busy" stuff many people talk about. I find it hard to believe that you only have 30 minutes per day free.

Not that you are me or vice versa. However, I work..... ahh, you know what. There is no point in me even saying what I do and how I fit it in. I know mothers with little kids who work 2 jobs and find the time to compete in physique competition. But what does that really mean for you?

I guess all I am saying is, what is life without your health. What is your job without your health? Again, it comes down to prioritizing.

What kind of advice were you hoping for? Are you looking for someone to tell you what kind of equipment for your home to buy?

Do you have stairs in your house? If so you could do stairs- they are a GREAT workout.

Or, if you live in a safe neighborhood, go for jogs. If you want to really step it up, you can do HIIT where you run as hard and fast as you can for about 40 seconds and then walk for about 2 minutes, or until you are able to do another session of running for about 40 seconds. You do this back and forth for about 20 minutes, or less than that if you are first starting out and cant last that long. But HIIT is great for short workouts that really work and keep your metabolism up long after you stop. There is a thread around here explaining it better than I have.

As far as weight training, get some hand weights (dont get the really wimpy ones though- no 1lb weights!!) and get a book with some exercises to do with them. Also just things like push-ups, squats, the things where you lower yourself with your arms on a chair, kickbacks, plank position, etc....you can find lists online with exercises that only require your own body weight.

There are also workout videos. Sometimes you have to look a little to find some you like, but they can be great workouts. I like Tae-Bo personally.

Walk, run, ride your bike, buy a $6 jump rope from Wal-Mart. There's a ton of bodyweight exercises you can do at home too. You don't need the gym at all.

And I agree with the above. You don't NEED to go to the gym. There is plenty of exercise you can do from home. As long as you progressively increase intensity over time in whatever form of exercise you are doing, your body will adapt and improve.

I'm busy too.

I'm glad I rearranged my schedule to get up an hour earlier every day to exercize.

It has given me more energy to be more efficient during my workday, which in turn allows me to leave earlier, which in turn lets me get stuff done on the farm earlier, which means I get more free time in the evening.

Sounds weird, but it works. Make the time, and you get this bonus time!

Thats the real secret

Like idigoiis is saying. The hardest thing to do is make yourself change your lifestyle. It's a catch 22. Being unhealthy saps any energy you might have. So after working all day the last thing you want to do is work out. The good thing is that when you do start excercising the energy levels come back and you find that the excuses you were using before were ridiculous and that you should have started a long time ago. Start slow, walking or jogging in place, sit ups or push ups. EVERY little bit helps and will add up. Try resistance training with rubber bands at your desk if you are in an office. I sit in front of a PC all day and was not getting any exercise. Once I started going to the gym feeling good got addictive. Once that happens you will make time.

I don't just have 30 minutes free a day. At the moment I'm getting home from college at about 5pm and after having something to eat and taking a shower, I do school work until about 11 pm and then go to bed, but I do take about 3 30 minute breaks inbetween.

do workouts in 15 minute intervals then - the quick break would probably do you some good since you're so busy... it's not like you have to put on workout clothes and go out somewhere - there's stuff you can do right at home...

Back when I was in college, I took 18 credit hours per semester, which was 50% more class time than the typical full time student. I was married with a kid. I was in a fraternity. I worked 35 hours per week at my normal job, which was 5 days worth of 7 hours, but I had to commute for an hour each way to get to work. I have ADD so about the only way I could study and remember anything was if I stayed up all night, so I did that twice a week. It was also during the big .COM boom of the late 90's so I had a second job where I telecommuted out of San Francisco and wrote websites, which was significant enough that I made an EXTRA $25K a year. I seriously doubt that many people invests more time than me in college, yet I still found time to exercise. It's just a matter of priorities.

That's the blunt truth Corn. I hate being so blunt, but the point is, you can always find time to exercise unless you don't want to, and it is all about priorities. If you don't hold your health in high regards, chances are, you aren't going to adhere to anything on a long term scale.

I will carry this belief to my grave, or until I am proven wrong. I have friends that are in med school and find the time to train every single day. And I am sure we all know people that are extremely busy, yet, still take care of themselves.

I hope you are able to find a way to fit daily exercise into your schedule. It is well worth it!

Get up at 4:30 a.m and train in the morning - i did it for 2 years as a busy dad - a wife and 4 young kids at the time

Don't forget about weekends too. I seriously doubt your schedule is the same on Saturday and Sunday. Most people's college schedule is slacker on Tuesday's and Thursdays too, so maybe squeeze in half an hour on those days then do more on the weekends.
