I believe you're referring to the elliptical trainer. Its an excellent machine for cardio exercise, however, I've found that the data/results it displays at the end is not entirely accurate. I've received different summaries from different machines, as far as different readings of distances and number of calories burned.
Of course, there is fluctuations due to my inability to keep track or maintain the same exact speed, however, it is best to use the summary as a guideline or a reference, but don't rely on it too much.

There are pros and cons to each different cardio trainer. The elliptical may make you feel that you have not gotten your workout, but it is because there is less stress and impact on your feet from the motion. On treadmills your body is moving in a vertical motion and since your feet leaves the ground at a higher height and comes down and collides with the treadmill belt as opposed to the ellitical you may feel like you've received a better workout due to more effort needed.
I recommend testing all the different machines and finding which one you are most comfortable using. I believe the ellitical does really burn more calories than most other machines, however, pick the one which you are most comfortable and satisfied with after your work out.
