Building strength with no equipment, no pushups, dips etc

I can finger curl elephants.

Is this a joke?

I can imagine I'm an international playboy with the looks of Bradd Pitt, the body of Arnold and the **** of John Holmes but it doesn't make it happen

I have found a method to build strength but not sure if it increases size. It requires zero equipment, no walls, doors, no pushups, dips, pullups.

I can't find it anywhere online, but basically, I just imagine I have a set of cables and visualize exercises with the cables, for example, I might do a chest press, so I imagine holding the cables, and with full exertion with a slow and steady pace, push forward, You get about 8-10 reps, before you are spent. Instead of exerting a force against a weight, you are using your full capacity throughout the whole exercise.

I've seen a Circus performer doing the exercises, and he wasn't huge, but extremely strong.

I`m trying to imagine you not talking shyyateee and its not possible:violent2:

Haha, I do remember reading something a few years back (Mens Health I believe; before I knew it was a pile of ****) that said exactly the same thing. Some research that said by visualising lifting you could increase strength without actually lifting weights.

IMO it’s just another way of justifying being lazy but who knows

I think there is research supporting that you can get stronger by thinking about training. Though I doubt it is very effective in the long run. If it is possible, it probably wouldn't be strength due to more contractile proteins being formed, since that requires load, but maybe through nerual adaptions. I've been reading a lot in my motor behaviour textbook lately, and one of the motor areas of the brain, the premotor area shows the same neural activity when thinking about a movement as when actually performing it. In the book this wasn't in connection to getting stronger, but improving a movement technique wise.

I can smack together some quotes and references if you want, but right now I'm on my way out the door to bake with my GF and a friend of hers :p

I hope that’s a euphemism; if I find out you’ve just been making cakes you’ll have to have the man card removed again

It's cake! Cake is allowed. Besides, they are baking, I'm here. They will call me when the stirring gets tough, though.

I thought I might add, its action, you actually tense your muscles while doing the exercise, the visualization part of it was just to help you do the exercises. you are still using full force in tensing the muscles throughout the range of motion.

I don't think you can achieve maximum voluntary contraction unless you're actually pushing or pulling against something heavy. I don't think you can reach MVC by just flexing.

I wish my husband would bake with me... Karky you the man!!:ironing:
