Building Endurance

I was just wondering what exercise will help build my endurance for running. Would the elliptical machine or stair stepper best the best way?
 
I wanted to know this my self, so I googled it and this was what I got.
 
I've have noticed that pretty much any cardio will help in running. I had about a month where I didn't run at all (I've ran on and off for 4 years and injured my ankle playing basketball enough not to run). I did hit the exercise bike hard that month though and when my ankle was ok to run, i picked up right where I left off.
