Bruising

I have noticed since I started working out I'm bruising alot easier. Does anyone know if this could be called by the exercising.. Does this happen to anyone else? What causes it?

Sorry I can't help... I bruise easily anyway. You can barely poke me with your finger and I will have a HUGE bruise. All I can figure is you are moving around a lot more therefore bumping yourself. You may have bruised this easily before but just never noticed it.

If its not the exercising that's causing the bruising, I guess its plausible that exercising might make you more prone to it. Bruising is caused by blood rushing to the surface of injured skin to repair it (or something like that), and regular exersize will improve your hearts condition and slightly elevate your blood pressure if you have low pressure to start (and lowers it if you have high pressure).

I know for me, I have always had really low blood pressure (I used to faint a lot when I was a teenager, and I also can't maintain my own body temperature very well), and since I've started doing cardio exersizes I've been getting dizzy a lot less often and also can keep myself warmer in cooler rooms.

I'm not very good with biology though, so I wouldn't take any of what I said as gospel, but it makes sense to me.

Hi Christina, yes Jennylynn is right. You aren't bruising more because of increased exercise it's just that you're moving around alot more and probably knocking yourself on gym equipment, pool ladders etc. If you are worried get your doctor to take a blood test to determine clotting time and whether you might be a bit anaemic. Hope this helps :)

Im actually glad someone asked this because I was wondering myself. I pretty much only workout on a treadmill and its at an incline for approx. 5 to 6 miles a day and I always have bruises on my legs like the back of my calfs. I dont bang on any equipment and I have not a clue how they get there...LOL. Unless someone beats me when Im sleeping

i noticed the same thing! here's what i found tonight when studying fluid and electrolytes for my exam on wednesday...

when levels of calcium are low in your body, you will be prone to clotting/bruising. now, in our case, the increase in activity is requiring an increase in calcium. calcium is essential in muscle contractility and given our increase in activity, we are not supplementing our bodies to the level it requires. so we are likely to see an increase in bruising susceptibility.

of course, this is one theory of why it might be occurring. i upped my calcium intake a couple of weeks ago, so we shall see what happens.

Makes alot od sense. I take supplements but dont know how much calcium is in them and I dont drink milk..HHMMM. Maybe I should up my calcium and see if that makes a difference. Thanx. I was feeling crazy when people started saying it had to be from banging myself on the machine. I have a treadmill...LOL.

Thanks to everyone for replying!!

Julie73- I'm a very sound sleeper so someone could actually be beating me while i'm sleeping!!

t'is- Now that you said that, it does make alot of sense!
