Hi guys,

I'm thinking of new things to start eating that are quick and simple. I'm leaning toward peanut butter (organic) and white albacore tuna, but does anyone know of any good bread or pita with low carbs and possibly low calories?

What bread or pita do you guys eat? and should I stray from peanut butter or be leary of it? Does anybody here think plain old Jiff or skippy is better or should I stick with the organic whole foods brand?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.....Thanks guys

There's a product I've been getting lately, that i got the first time because of the calories, i've gotten it since because Ilike the taste.

I'm not sure if it's local or not

Joseph's Oat Bran and Whole Wheat Pita Bread - it's listed as low carb

it's got 60 calories a loaf and about 6 grams of fiber.. I think the net carbs are something like 3 but i'm not sure.

It's kinda flimsy, and doesn't hold up to really saucy things - but I stuff cucumbers and tomatoes into it and it's really tasty...

Boston, also makes a whole wheat tortilla, the smaller size, that's 70 calories and 9 grams of fiber, it's great for a wrap... (the larger tortilla has over 200 calories so read labels...)

Thanks maleficent!!

I searched for the Joseph's label bread and found nothing, but I did find a couple of other message boards and it seems a good amount of people have found this product at wal-mart so I will definitely start there. Thanks again.

the same company also makes a really good hummus as well - in all sorts of flavors... :D

In my local grocery store, this bread is closer to the deli section along wiht other pita breads and wrap breads.. so do some exploring in your grocery store and read labels...

oh how I love hummus and pita. I get this one that's roasted red peppers from whole foods with these mini whole wheat pita pockets. I could eat that all day, but of course I'm trying to move on from that mode of thinking so I won't. how healthy is hummus? anybody know? I just know it's base is chick peas.

Thanks

I just know it's base is chick peas.

It's chick peas (or garbonzo beans, depending on what you call 'em), olive oil, garlic, lemon juice and tahini (which is a sesame seed paste, which kind of has the consistency of peanut butter)

hummus is healthy in moderate doses, it's got fiber and protein from the beans in it... like with the bread, read the labels on the commercial stuff, some of it has A LOT of oil in it...

One of my favorite snacks is a handful of celery sticks with about 1 tablespoon of hummus... which ends up being under 100 calories, and depending on the manufacturer of the hummus, including the celery, 3 -5 grams of fiber...

So thats what garbonzo beans are... lol. *recalls word being used on Zabumafu*

Home made hummus can be even better ;) And it isn't that hard to make. And would not have much MSG in it if you do.

I've made hummus with just the beans, a little chicken broth and lemon and garlic and it's really good - the tahini (or if you watchthe food netowrk at all - alton brownmakes it with peanut butter) is what really smoothes it out - but it's not completely needed andjust as good without it.

Actually went bread shopping this morning and found a 70 cal bread by sara lee (will post all the specifics in the morning) and some rice cakes for snacks. I'm psyched....o.k. I need a life :D
