Sport Bread or no bread?

Sport Fitness
Hi, I've read the stickies etc. But in that list I don't see bread. Yet you read endless threads from big gainers about "I ate a sandwich this, I ate toasted brown bread that".

So I understand white bread bad, brown bread == better. But I thought both were, erm, 'bad', meaning, if you have a choice, there are better alternative.

So I'm confused - because I'm trying to add an extra 500kcal to my diet and an avocado/chicken breast/eggwhite/romaine sandwich using brown bread would have been perfect.

:eating:

Get a whole grain wheat bread with 2-3 grams of fiber per slice. I like the Sara Lee Whole Wheat bread with honey. It's got 110 calories and 3 grams fiber per slice. Read your labels cuz I'm not sure what breads you will find in your location. You'll probably end up spending $2.50 - $3.50 USD per loaf but it's well worth it.

If you are trying to do a low carbohydrate diet, any bread is to be avoided.

Otherwise, bread is fine, but just make sure that it is whole grain / whole meal. Many brown breads are mostly non-whole grain, so check that whole wheat is the first ingredient.

If you like bread, you may want to make your own bread (with a bread machine if you do not want to do a lot of work by hand). Then you can control the ingredients that go into it.

I see - this makes sense. I guess the nutrition sticky is a bit confusing - because it omits the bread but then mentions potatoes! What's the difference? Both are incredibly carb heavy.

I avoid all breads now, even whole grain as I’ve found that starchy carbs leave me feeling bloated. I do eat wraps sometimes though, still starchy carbs but less of them

I love, adore whole grain wheat bread.... BREAD is awesome... how can you make a peanut butter and jam sandwich without bread. The key is to consume it before 2 pm in the afternoon... Bread for breakfast and lunch is great!!!
