brand new to running....

I have always wanted to run, but i am never able to. I am about 5'9, 190 and very long legged.I am not that heavy but i see people who are huge next to me and they have no problems running what so ever, i get so jealous. Why can't i do it? I have no problems running for about 5-10 minutes but that's it. I don't know if i focus to much on my breathing or what, and sggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there.

I was in the same boat when i first started, i could run about 5 mins at a normal pace and still be exhausted. in my opinion the breathing comes naturally, if i found myself getting out of breath further on in the run i would take a few deep breaths through my nose, which gives you more air into your lungs.

I followed a pre para training program and it advised running a comfortable pace for 20 mins (mon-fri), then on a sunday you would try and run a certain distance in a chosen amount of time.

In my view its so unreal what you can achieve just give it a little time and you will see the changes.

Coming up to the new year it will be a whole year I've since i stopped hanging round on the streets being a s*it bag doing stupid amounts of drugs, but with a bit of motivation its truly amazing what you can acheive.

This is just what i done, im not advising you to follow this program but you can see the concept of adding extra distance on each week.

The Pre PRAC Training Programme

Problem?

What exactly is the problem after 5-10 minutes of running? Short breathe or what?

The biggest issue I ever seem to have when I break back into the long distance running is getting my heart rate and breathing to sync up(Basically not conditioned.) Once I get used to it and I've pushed myself to the level I want it balances out and I seem to be able to just keep running until my legs tire(This apparently took a little more than 9 miles to wear my legs out last time). If its not that, what exactly is the issue?

To be honest it just sounds like you need to keep at it... How long have you been attempting? Maybe consider a lower pace for now and increase distance, then progressively increase your speed to a level you are happy with. Exhaustion=no fuel in your body and you need to intake a better diet that is geared to do this properly(Don't look at me, I just eat what feels right to get this job done.) Short of breath=conditioning problem or possible medical issue. Just try and focus calmly on breathing consistent intake/out take patterns while you are running, if it isn't getting better after a couple good weeks of conditioning possibly see a doctor for a physical.

This may sound bizarre, but I ran on and off last night for the first time, without feeling like i was going to pass out, i think mentally i am so worried about my breathing.i put an ipod on and i was actually focused on the music and not my breathing! It felt so wonderful, it may not sound like much, but i feel awesome about it!

That can make a world of difference as well. Good to hear. :)
