Brain Tumor

Since I joined this forum many months ago I have mostly just read and learned some things, as I don’t really have much to contribute. I didn’t know if any medical professionals posted on here or not.

I know a gentleman that is in his early seventies and has been diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. I don’t know what symptoms led to the diagnosis.

I have been doing some contract work for this man for several months. He will be in the best of spirits one moment and then extremely mad the next moment. He forgets everything we discuss about our project from one day to the next. Sometimes I also think he just may have selective memory---remembers what he wants to.

What I want to know is if he has surgery, what I might expect. What are the possible up-sides and downsides to the surgery? Could the surgery cause a stroke?

Thanks in advance!

I am no medical professional, But I watched my brother battle Brain cancer for 5 years through 3 tumors....he lost the battle at the age of 35

Alot depends on where the tumor is, what area of the brain it is affecting. Sure a stroke is a possibility, it is with any head surgery

He may just be getting older and have selective memory, plus he does have a brain tumor, he will have to be operated on....it's hard to focus on life while your head is about to be cut open.

Just do your best to support him, he is in his 70's, he has lived a good life and he can continue to get some more years if all goes well. Take on the brunt of the work and make him feel included on the project, but you will have to take 90% of the work. He will have a hard time focusing on.

His mood swings may be a symptom of the tumor, even though it is benign it in a closed container so to speak. Location also matters as far as symptoms are concerned. Any time you operate on the brain you risk damaging healthy tissues, and this could cause permanent disability. Usually we aren't certain of the impact until the patient wakes up, although surgeons can estimate the risk of damage to healthy tissue and anticipate some neurological defecits.
