Body Weight Training

I've become a nut about body weight training...I think it is a great thing.

I wish all the years I tried to bulk up and lift as heavy as I could I would have stuck with staying lean and doing a solid body weight routine like I do now.

My avatar is old, I took it a year or more ago. I'm about 12-13% body fat there. I'm about 10% now. I guess I'll get around to taking a new one.

Anyway, I thought I'd post my routine, just for grins. I work out at home with very little equipment these days (power tower and ab wheel) I do all exercises 1 set to failure. I'll put my current reps as of yesterday:

Push Ups: 165
Dips: 80
Australian Row: 80
Chins: 35
Reverse Crunch: 70
Ab Roller Roll Outs: 70
Box Jumps (Actually stairway jumps lol, 4th step): 36
Mountain Climbers: 120 (each side, so 240 total)

I don't do any traditional "cardio" My heart rate is sky high during this routine

Old climber (was sub 60kg) always been strong for my size so bodyweight work has been something easy I finish on to assess how hard I worked in the rest of the session. If I do 3 sets of 10 wide chins on short rest easily at the end of a deadlift session it's a bad sign when the first set is fine but I tire fast I’m happy.
I got a Rip60 for Christmas and am discovering the joy of bodyweight training made difficult.
I set out intending to add weight to my bodyweight work using the suspension trainer as I can on bars or more stable TRX set up. Not happening. Dips at the end are maxing out at 10 reps, in fairness full depth feet off floor but really finding them hard.
I used to box and some of our circuits consisted of various press ups 10 off each until the coach decided it was enough, these would have claps, wide/narrow grips, leg off, nose down, chest down, hands off etc.
I am at my all-time heaviest now, over 80kg, but still tend to be good on bodyweight work. Not done fresh to failure in a long time though.
I would heartily recommend a suspension trainer if you are body weight focused, unstable training for unstable minds. One of my favourites is feet on handles doing push ups with a clap, you shove off and have no certain idea where your hands will land, the slight variations makes things difficult. I got mine cheap, standard prices take the mick for what they are but I like it.
I like plyometric work too, but that is a different ball game again.

I am a real freak though. I like to lift heavy, run fast, handle bodyweight, have coordination and be able to do a host of stupidly unnecessary things. Couldn't care less about appearance, ability is a big thing in my world.

Thats some pretty good numbers there GOOCH. I love the bodyweight training, I always explore different ways of training to get the heart rate up with calisthenics and weights together and it works wonders.

For me, strength is more important. Good luck with the training!

Blessings,

J

TRX good, pure personal opinion RIP60 better. Seen other stuff out there and most of it is junk I could make better from straps at the DIY store.

I got to a stage where I could do some ludicrous stuff on TRX with difficulty, and am at the same on RIP60 with pin in, remove pin, it's a different ball game and feels so much more unbalanced.
Unbalanced training, very good for an unbalanced mind.
Best thing I have done so far without pin is dips, an activity I can do easily on bars and relatively easily on suspension trainer with pin in place, took me 4 weeks to be able to do a clean 10 with decent depth without the pin, great stuff.
