body fat??

how can you gauge what your body fot % is. i know i should get it tested, where i'm not sure! i was never really worried about it before but then looking on here i relized that there are skinny fat ppl! who knew! i don't think i should be worried but is there anyway to kind of gauge otherwise?

Callipers are an intrusive yet accurate way and are cheap.

You can also get things (bioelectrical impedence testers?) that send electricity through you and work out your body fat but they are expensive.

can you tell by your body measurements if you need to reduce your body fat? until i can get tested? i am starting to panic. i thought i was healthy and i am very fit, i eat good and now i'm worried, i don't want to be a skinny fat person! i can see my abs if that helps!!

okay i can't believe i'm going to fess up like this but these are my mesurements - don't worry no risky ones. around the biggest part of the hinny-35"; hips mid-32 1/2"; waist 25"; thigh-unflexed?-20"; ribs-29"; bi's unflexed- 10 1/2" - flexed- 12 1/2". so can i guage by that if my bf is too high or should i be pinching my self in various places and measuring how much extra there is and do i flex or not??? help!

There are a couple ways you can get you body fat tested...

1.) Underwater Weighing
2.) Electrical Impedence
3.) Skinfold Calipers
4.) Body Circumference Measurements
5.) Online Calculators

Don't waste your time with BMI... Gauge your success on the way you feel, how the clothes fit, etc... and if you need numbers, then look at Fat Body Mass and Lean Body Mass.

I agree. BMI is the biggest load of crap ever. It provides absolutely no indication as to how healthy an individual might be.

Why are you so concerned with your body fat percentage? You can get it tested if you like, but I really don't see what you are panicking about. Like DeX says, it is far more important how you feel about yourself and how you look in the mirror. If you look at yourself and are happy with what you see then what difference does it make what your body fat percentage is? If you are in good physical shape and eat right you have nothing to be worried about. Body fat percentage is determined by a large number of factors including sex (women usually have a higher percentage than men), diet (obvious), genetic factors (sometimes it's not something that's completely under your control), and exercise (again, obvious).

It sounds like you're in pretty good shape and you seem to have been previously confident with your physical status because it seems like you all of the sudden started worrying about body fat percentage. Seems to me like you're getting worked up over nothing. Give yourself a break and forget about your body fat percentage and concentrate on how you look and feel.

Jenn, those measurements are very nice. Plus, for a woman to be able to see her abs is also very good. I have done a ton of bf tests, and based on that I would guess your bf to be around 16%. Give or take no more than 2%. Good job!

Speaking of calipurs, I bought mine and and I recieved it this past Monday. ANYWAYS. It apparently only needs to take ONE skinfold, which is a part right above your right hip. Well, anyways, did it, and I apparently have like 6% body fat. It's so messed up. I wasted like 32 bucks. >_<''

wow thanks guys *sigh* i was okay with myself and i think i am in pretty good shape i feel really good health wise and all my clothes fit really good. everyone on these forums seems so concerned with bf it kinda made me a little nervous. i work it hard and alter my workout so it is balanced and i am strong. i am extremely proud of alot of my achievements. so i guess i'll stop worrying so much. as far as the abs go i'm really proud of them they are smokin' and so are my arms- get compliments from my fellow classmates on them. so i guess its all good. 16% i can live with! :) thanks.

Well you should be.. considering the "average" female is around 28% BF and you're at 16%... so there's nothing to worry about....

When in a gaining or losing fat mode it's nice to know your bf% so you know if the weight you lost or gained is fat or muscle. But if you look and feel good who cares, it's just a number. I just pay attention to how clothes fit and how much I can pinch in certain areas.

I don't know how much. My point is I get familiar with how they feel 'right now'. That way I know if feels like it's getting bigger or smaller. I pinch below my belly button, love handle area, chest. Pinch where ever you gain fat first. For me it is the places I just mentioned.

lol the only place i've ever seemed to gain fat is in the tushie. i had my prepregnacy body back within 3 weeks after birth. now that i've gone back to school i thought i was doing pretty good. now at 31 i feel better than i ever have with a couple of exceptions, but a couple of areas will never get any better so i try not to think about it. like i said everyone here seems so concerned with bf and i really never thought about it before. i've never had extra fat that was excessive anywhere but all you fit ppl talking about it i guess i just went a little on panic mode thinking i should be worried about it. no harm no foul, i'm all good. i think i get it, i won't worry about it for now.
