Bodpod?

I contacted Miami University about body fat testing. They have a hydrostatic tank, but they seem to want to steer me toward the BODPOD air displacement test. I have never heard of this. Can anyone here vouch for its accuracy?

It's pretty accurate. Part of my senior research in college was the validity of hand-held sensors vs 3-point/4point skin caliper vs hydrostatic vs BodPod. I'd have to look more precisely at the results to give you more insight, but the BodPod proved to be a more accurate measurement as it reduced error comparing the other procedures.

does it cost any different for you if you go either way?

I just emailed the guy who can give me prices. My only worry is they say bf scales are pretty accurate and I get readings I know aren't right. I don't know what the deal is. You can see my avatar...my scale on regular mode says I'm over 18% , athlete mode says 7.8. Most other methods (measurements, calipers) say I'm about 11-12 which I think is probably about right when I look in the mirror.

I get a similar thing with HR handgrips on cardio equipment. I can manually check my pulse and it's way higher than the machine says

I do have heavy calluses on my hands and feet...can that affect accuracy?

We'll see what the BODPOD price is. I hope it's reasonable.

Yes, and also that the held-held sensors and taking an electronic reading from your heart to your hands while bouncing and moving. The electrical impulse can become highly distorted...which is why I purchased a chest strap.

that's rigght! some of our serious posters only., We aint taking any time to talk any shet! MAlkore!!! good to see your name...

a guide for futrue reference on this topic of Gooshes body fat!

^ OMG, that's the funniest post I've ever seen :)

But I think it left out the colon blow high velocity poop. And the five alarm poop.

Please have both tests done, I’ll even pay for it! If their dunk tank is an old fashioned one with a chair and analog scale, it may not be totally accurate, but should still be closer than the bod pod.

Keep in mind, Bod-pod has deep pockets to do PR work and marketing, sometimes claiming they are the new ‘gold standard’ (hydrostatic) or equivalent to. They even ghost write articles that are printed in newspapers and blogs. Their pockets are deep because these machines are cheap compared to building a hydrostatic tank and they’ve sold a lot of them, even overseas. Good for them, they are great business people; I have respect for that, seriously it’s quite an accomplishment to do what they’ve done.

Air displacement plesmography (bod pod) is not an effective way to measure body fat and I don’t think it ever will be equal to hydrostatic weighing. It’s much harder to measure the weight of air than water and there are way too many more variables with it, including what you wear during the test, if you’ve exercised beforehand, if you’ve eaten, and your hydrations levels. Therefore the results will be inaccurate and will not track your progress. How would you know if your hydration level was the same as your last test? I’ve heard many people complain about the accuracy of the bod pod tests as they’ve had results that don’t even make sense. Of course I own bodyfattest.com and therefore biased in my opinion. What I do give them credit for is the ability to test body fat in infants and small children, although I’m not sure that it’s a relevant measure of health or anything else but I’m sure there is something doctors or scientists might use it for. Also for people who have a fear of water, air displacement can at least provide a number for clients to follow. Based on dunking 1,000’s of people and studies (not funded by bod pod), I’d have to say that for most people, calipers will be a more accurate measure. If the bod-pod was accurate you would find them at human performance labs around the country because they are easier to move, low cost, etc., but they don’t have them.

By the way, if you live in any of the cities we are located in or if you visit one, jump in one of our tanks and I’m happy to pay for that test too.

If you do want to take up my offer you’ll need you to provide me the complete reports from the tests, send me a few pictures of yourself without clothes (except a small suit or briefs of course), and give me an idea of your exercise regime and eating habits. Knowing these things I can guess within 1-2% the body fat percentage of 95% of people.

So you mean to tell me that you can GUESS his body fat within 1-2%, with room for error of 5%... but only after he gives you the results from multiple body fat tests and half nude pics? That's quite service you're offering there!

If you're making money off of this body fat guessing business, I want in.... :action13:

I can live with DEXA telling me my bf is 7.8%, thanks for the offer though. Its quite funny, DEXA doesn't ask for my eating habits and exercise regime. And, I am not going to base my BF on a persons personal judgment. I want the real deal.

Gooch is there a place in town or nearby where you can set up a DEXA Scan? I get my scans for free (my family is close to the Doc, that runs the medical establishment), but she normally charges about 50 bucks or so.

Best regards,

Chillen

Yeah, there are good hospitals here. I'm sure I could get it done.

I'm not so sure I'm comfortable for someone buying me things in exchange for half-nude pics:confused4: Sorry if it was a genuine offer, but I don't want to end up on a gay porn site

What did you end up doing for your BF measurements?

Dexa? If so, which hospital in Cinci?

Thanks

I got a bod pod done yesterday and it said I was 30% body fat. I do weights and a lot of cycling and using my website foodcomputer.com I am 17% bodyfat. On foodcomputer I took 2,000 hydrostatic water tank tests along with about 20 measurements such as belly, arm, wrist, neck, weight, etc... and did a multilinear regressions and found that using the belly measurement (level at the navel) and your weight you can get a pretty accurate bodyfat measurement within a percent or so. Two people at my work used my site and didn't believe the answer (because it was kind of high) so I paid to get them watertank tested and they were both within a half a percent.
You can try it for free:
Or to see the results of the accuracy of the multlinear regression:

As a rule of thumb though -- if you can your abs your about 10% bodyfat. If you're ripped below 10%.
bodybuilders are 3-5%. You look about 7-8% bodyfat to me.

The bod pod tech will ask you how active you are which they shouldn't have to -- the machine should just know your bodyfat. This means they're guessing a bit.

Anyway -- did you ever get your water tank test?

If so please compare it to foodcomputer and I'll bet you it's within a half %.

Joseph
