BMI innacurate?

BMI (body mass index) is yours bodies weight in relation to your height and is used to determine if your underweight, normal or overweight.
I however don't think that this is an accurate way of measuring whether your overweight or normal as it does not take into account muscle mass and body fat percentage. What's your opinion?

BMI is a bunch of crap, especially if you work out and have a lot of lean muscle mass. My son is 6' and 185 lbs. The kid could do cover shots for GQ or Muscle & Fitness, but according to his BMI he is overweight. I'm 5' 10" 185 lbs with 12% bodyfat, yet according to the BMI I am a regular lardo.

Lol, I thought so, 'cos I'm also overweight with 10% bodyfat according to the calculator.

exactly. Most bodybuilders who are leaned out to 5% bodyfat for a competition still qualify as Obese on the BMI chart.

it also doesn't take into account your overall frame. narrow framed overweight can register as 'ideal weight' and wide framed skinny people will be 'overweight'.

BMI is Prejudiced and Narrow in All Ways

The BMI has always said that I'm OBBEEESSSEEE whether I'm super fit or have gained weight ... it is racist - what about say, like Maoris in New Zealand? Islanders? Also what about girls that get more chest than most, like "butch", Xena? It's like doctors ... they have oppinions about nothing ever getting better because it's the "usual" and there's an "average" and miricle/super healings are COMMON! Skye :D

People misunderstand and misuse BMI, it's not suppose to be used on individuals, really. It's supposed to be used in large population studies where the number of people who are body builders is so small that it does not represent a large error in the estimates.

Waist circumference is probably a better number to use on an individual basis, thought some people do get kind of bulky waists from muscles, but not by that much.

The sad thing is some health and life insurance companies base their rates on BMI. For the fatties, that's fine, but for people with decent muscle mass, they are getting screwed.
