Blood sugar level. Should I be concerned?

Ok so I went to the Dr. yesterday on a follow up visit. He tells me my blood sugar was a little high. It was 113 and "high normal" is 105. He said I need a "fasting blood test" to be sure. After I left though I realized that since my last one was taken right before a test that required a fast, the results he had were from a fasting blood test. Unless there is another difference to the tests.

I figured there may be some diabetics on this board so I thought I would ask if 113 is anything to be concerned about. If you are a diagnosed diabetic what is your level so I can compare?

My friend google tells me that normal blood sugar levels can be anywhre from 70 - 150...

at my heaviest weight my blood sugar stayed around 95 - now it's about 85

Blood sugar levels should be between 70 and 125 in order to be considered normal for random testing.

to be tested for diabetes - i thought you usually were given an oral glucose tolerance test where you start out by fasting - then you have to choke down a disgustingly sweet drink.. multiple times... blood sugar test alone isn't really a predictor of diabetes...

that's not to say you shouldn't be aware of what it is..

Thanks mal. I googled a lot of sites but as with most things medical you get a lot of conflicting info. So far from what I've gathered it really depends on if my test was considered a fasting test, or a random. Fasting tests should be 70-99. Random levels I have see about 10 different ranges. Anything from 70- 120 to 150

Your doctor probably ordered an AC1 test. The results will tell your doctor how elevated your blood glucose levels have been for an extended period of time. The numbering is different from the other test you took. Up to 6% is normal, 6.5 %+ is considered abnormal. A non diabetic person would normally be about a 5%. I recently took the test and I had a 6%, so I am borderline. I have to loose weight because I could very easily develop diabetes.

Mal is right, they give a very sweet ( mine tasted like a VERY sugary citrus drink) they do this after you fast. I think it was do it, wait 30 mins, drink again, then an hour later do it again, and then two hours. ( I think, I know they did the 1 hour and 2 hour mark- they take your blood before the next drink of course, after the hour or two hours is up) Its not bad, just a long boring process!

I was borderline also, I was actually told I have Insulin Resistance , after I had lost my first 20lbs- and put on Metformin. That was so hard to get adjusted too, I think now it just makes me sick( so I take it once every two days, only way it doesn't make me feel horrible, with terrible side effects). I will be talking to my Endocrinologist ( I am seeing a new one) about this on the 28th, maybe they can retest and say I am all better hehe.

Another from Bama here

Roooooooll Tide! And I have Insulin Resistance too. The doctor never stayed on top of it though because my thyroid was top priority. I need to have my levels checked again. I think for that the upper limit was something like 29 and mine came back at 42. Diabetes runs in both sides of my family; both of my grandmothers died from complications, several other aunts and cousins have it. An Aunt on my dads side just had her leg amputated, another Aunt is blacking out on a daily basis and my mom was diagnosed with Type II. Enough to make me want to take off this remaining 22 lbs! The endocrine diseases seem to get us quicker than anything.

normal blood glucose levels?

Hi:
I just came across this forum. I know this is an old thread, but thought I'd post to see if anyone is still active here.

I have recently been diagnosed as a borderline type 2 diabetic. I have started regularly testing my blood sugar and find that it is up and down.

Some days, it is 125, other days, it is 150.

I read this article about - it says that the range is between 75 and 145 - is this what you all consider to be within normal range? If so - would you say that i have a chance of reducing my blood sugar?

:waving:My daughter was diagnosed by a urine dip rather than an oral test. I drank the sticky goo while preggers to test for gestational diabetes.

Good luck, hope you don't have to deal with diabetes.

Cheers
