Blood in urine, need alternatives to running

Hello,

I'm new to the forum. Just in the last day or so I started experiencing blood in my urine after long distance running. I need to lay off for about 4-5 days, per the doctor's instructions. Can anyone advise on some alternative training options to get a good calorie burn? I need something that won't aggravate my current condition.

By chance has anyone else experienced this? My doc says it's not rare, but it sure had me freaked out for an hour or so.

Thanks.

AJ

I didn't know that exercise could cause this! (I have had the same thing) I find it happens whenever I get afew hardcore days together, I was assuming it was some sort of polycystic ovary thing and been having all sorts of tests...(they didn't find anything) wish my doctor knew as much as yours seems to!

I'd say then if it is anything like me, its about pushing yourself to the extreme. Maybe cut down on the days you do push it, either go slower and take longer to get to your goals or do little and often over more days.
I don't know what the risks are with this- did your doctor say anything? (am obviously interested as I am in the same boat!) For me it doesn't seem to occur every time just some times, there are days I do go "all out 110% effort" and it doesn't happen and days I do the same and it does happen, there seems no real link other that when it does happen it will only be after a hard workout (though not every hard workout).

Maybe you need to build yourself up or work on your pelvic floor with things like Pilataes? am not really sure what causes this so don't really feel like I know what to advise or suggest, just wanted to post to say I have the same thing and never knew it was serious enough a problem to stop exercise nor that it was caused by exercise.

Hope you get somewhere with it!

Blood in urine

Summer,

Thanks for the reply. The doc just said that it was overexertion. I run quite a bit, but I have to admit I did exceed my usual over a 3-day period by running approximately 25 miles overall. The next morning is when I saw 'the red'. I think that staggering the workouts like you suggest is a good idea.

I'm basically just looking for exercises to do that don't exacerbate the bladder issue. I'm thinking of just focusing on upper body for a few days, as most of the info out there says that a 'jarring of the bladder' (whatever that means) is what causes the bleeding. Essentially, any exercise that causes rapid and persistent impact on the walls of the bladder, such as long distance running, can lead to bleeding.

I love running, but all the stuff that goes with it isn't so pretty. I've already had a couple toenails fall off, now this? Oh well, it's still the best stress relief for me!

Thanks for your reply.

hi,

It is so sad to hear this from you.

The best alternative for calorie burn out is Swimming. If you don't know it start learning it.

I really sucessed in reducing 8Kgs in a span of 8-9 months. Swimming also increases your muscular strength and stamina.

Best of luck!!

If you exercised so much that you started to get blood in your urine, maybe it's not a bad idea to take it easy for 4-5 days. It's not so long that you'll get much detraining at all.

Did the running specifically do this, or just exertion in general? If it's exertion in general, the doc probably wants you to rest. If there's something special about running that causes this and no other exercise will (can't imagine why) then you could try to find an alternative, but I'm betting your doc wants you to take it easy for a few days.

personally id take a week off, you wont lose much if any fitness and your body is probably knackered if its caused bleeding like your doc says it has

Cycling ! I have tried running and wonder how people can stick with it. Seat may be uncomfortable at first but sure beats all the other things running causes.
