blood donation!

Hey there,
does anybody know when, after donating blood, you can exercise again? I'll go tomorrow. I'll donate in the noon, and there'd be a run on schedule later in the afternoon.

Blood donation and running

That's a very good question. They say that you shouldn't do any strenous activities after you donate blood. I have never had a problem with donating blood. If you feel fine during and after the process I think you should rest a few hours and make sure to eat a good meal and you would be fine. However, if during the exercise you start to feel weak, light headed, or dizzy you need to stop right away.

Good job for donating blood by the way.

Although they used to say no stenuous exercise for 24 hours after donating a pint of blood, now they are saying 48 hours.

To be honest, losing a pint of blood will make you very suseptable to dehydrationg and passing out with heavy or sustained exercise and the donation site may start bleeding again with the increase in blood pressure from exercising.

I DO go to the gym the morning after giving blood, but I cannot do my regular routine and definately have to take it easier.

I would not recommend running/jogging at all the same day that you give blood (just from my personal experience).

from the American Red cross Website:
How can I ensure a pleasant donation experience?

You'll want a good night's sleep the night before, and a good breakfast or lunch before your donation. Drink fluids like juice, milk, or soda ahead of time. Take your normal medications as prescribed. Ensure you have adequate iron level by making iron-rich foods part of your daily diet. These include red meat, poultry, fish, green leafy vegetables, iron-fortified cereals, nuts, raisins and prunes. During your donation, relax. After your donation, have some juice and cookies in the canteen. Then you can go about your daily activities, but avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for the remainder of the day.

Hey guys, thanks for your suggestions! I'm pretty confused though, because it says that you postet on like 25th, 27th etc... but I didn't see any posts then? Weird.
However, I did take the day off after they suggested me to do so as well. I went running in the morning the next day, as usual. I felt a slight difference in endurance, but probably only because I was looking for it. Also my arm was a little sore so I didn't do any strength training that day either. The next day I was 100% again. I recommend it! You get lots of free food like cookies and juice... I love free food! :D
