Birth Control

My girlfriend wants to get on birth control. We're both in college and are 19 and we've been dating for a year. She know's she can get it from her doctor, but she thinks that will be embarassing b/c they are family friends. She doesn't want to ask her mother either b/c she's scared what she will say. What's the best way go about getting the pills? Is there any way I can get them instead?

Also, she's irregular with her period and was going to get on the pill last year with her mothers consent to help with her cycle, but I think she's still scared to ask about it.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Gary,

I understand your concerns. However the best place for these questions is her OB/GYN. Both go together and have an adult conversation with the DOC. Remember the pill is not 100% and no Child begs for this world!!! Adult choice bears adult consequences!

Oh, I understand completely. Other methods will also be put into action along with the pill.

im guessing she hasnt been to a gynecologist yet...

if thats the case, she should go, because 18-19 yr olds are supposed to start going once a year whether or not they are sexually active.

Since the doctor is a family friend, i think it would be REALLY weird to go to the same dr as a gyno (if that dr even is one)...sooo...her mom should know the importance of visiting one (if she is embarrassed to ask about that, she can always say she learned in health class she was supposed to be going)..

anyways, with a new dr, it shouldnt be an issue! Just make sure you can pay for them of course!! Another alternative is a women's health clinic...ive never been to one, but ive heard you can get them anonymously for pretty cheap. However, if she wants to get the pill to regulate her period, i would highly suggest she goes to a gyno that is able to prescribe the right one for her (there are lots of diff kinds)

good luck!

i kind of know what your gf is going through. i was embarrassed as a teen to talk to my mom about this as well, so i decided to go to planned parenthood. basically they will give her everything she needs confidentially and at a lower cost if she doesn't have insurance. that would probably be the best bet or she can just choose another OB/GYN of her choice and make an appt and go by herself without her mom. either way she will need to start getting a full annual exam especially if she is sexually active. good luck to ya both. just remember, better to be careful then sorry.;)

Thanks for all the help. I'm sure it won't be too much of a problem for her to get it for her irregular cycle.

yup, that will work too if she doesn't want to tell her mom she is sexually active, she can just say her cycles are irregular. there's nothing wrong w/that. good luck to the both of you. ;)

Hate to butt in here, but I would look around for some general womens health clinics.. there are alot that will keep everything confidential and get her on the pill. I would just call around and ask.

She’s 19. I don’t think any doctor, including a family friend, would look at her funny for asking for birth control. If that’s out of the question, check out a women’s health clinic. I have to agree with the others, though, she should consult with an OB/GYN first.

Yes - planned parenthood is a good idea. Is the girlfriend into fitness? If so, she should try to get a birth control pill that's as low as possible on the female hormones. She will likely chance as hormones have SO much to do with how a person acts/feels/is.

You may want to do some research on the net about birth control pills and options. There is a shot that a woman can take - she will then only get I think 4 periods per year, but there are some horror stories about it; so just become educated before making any decisions.

Best of luck!
