firstly i apologise if someone has posted a similar thread before and also for being a total novice. im eating healthy, cutting calories and losing weight. i have noticed recently that im getting some muscle definition showing through on my upper arms and shoulders. i have these horrible bingo wings - flabby untoned "flesh/skin" where my triceps (if ive got my anatomy right) are. has anyone got any tips on exercises for toning this area. i have some dumbells at several weights if they are any use. many thanks, slim

Try tricep dips. No weights required :). If your arms are low in body fat, I think mine are, and see definition there fairly quickly. Carry my weight in my stomach and hips mostly. Scrawnly legs and arms... then you'll see definition there more quickly. But if you carry excess weight on your arms, then it may take longer to see definition. If you don't know how to do a tricep dip, do an internet search for a video. I know they have video for them at myfittrainer.com also.

To vary a tricep dip and make it more difficult, keep your legs straight out rather than bent. I use a bottom step or use my stepper. I sit up close to it and put my hands on the step and lift my arse off the ground. I keep my legs bent, but not too close to my butt. Bringing them closer yet would make it easier.

notme, thanks for that. i will give them a go on my bottom stair.
i was carrying a lot of fat on my arms, but they have slimmed down a lot, hence the "wings". i am also carrying a fair bit of weight on my tum, seem to be losing it disproportionately at the mo. lost loads of my hips :) and not so much off my tum. ever since i had the kids i seem to have a thicker waist/tum area. slim

Slimming down and toning, comes MAINLY THROUGH PROPER DIET, and THEN maybe an exercise type can assist in (when the effected muscle grows a bit) in effecting tightening the skin (and with loss of fat tissue).

Chillen, I agree, but some people tend to carry fat in particular places. I'm sure you've seen a bigger guy/gal with skinny legs or arms before. If a person tends to not carry weight on their arms, they can get a toned look fairly quickly. It's my favorite place to work on because I can see results quickly. If I were working my abs in the same manner, I'd never see results. Too much extra padding there.

I understand, and you just restated, what I said in a different way. If the arm muscle Tissue GROWS, this can assist in tightening the skin in the arm,,,,,,but the fat will remain (this is lost through deficit diet, or a diet type that correlates this), when fat tissue is lost in this area(and remember can not spot reduce, its lost all over), this sag will reduce how much depends on several factors (some may need surgery, some can get this done with diet and exercise).

Overall chillen, I agree with what your saying.

I think the difference is that maybe a persons arms have a 10-12% bodyfat to start with. Maybe the waist is 35-37%. Maybe overall their percent is 32. Who knows. So if a person does not carry much fat in their arms, then they don't need to loose fat there to see results. So, then arm definition would not be considered spot reducing because there is no reducing.

I can't speak for Slimby, but I personally don't carry much fat in my arms. I'm not talking about spot reducing, because I don't need to reduce fat in my arms. Hence, definition without fat loss even though my body fat percent, overall, is higher.

When you're speaking about the entire body as a whole I completely and wholdheardedly agree with your statment "Slimming down and toning, comes MAINLY THROUGH PROPER DIET, and THEN maybe an exercise type can assist in (when the effected muscle grows a bit) in effecting tightening the skin (and with loss of fat tissue)."

as i mentioned in my earlier post, i am eating healthy, creating a calorie deficit and have lost over 4.7stone (going from a uk size 22 + to a 14) in the process. i cannot afford the gym at the mo, but have increased my activity levels, especially as i find i have tonnes more energy these days. because i have lost a lot of weight in my arms (they were really fat before) i am noticing some muscle definition showing through in my upper arms but sadly not my wings. i am not trying to spot reduce fat, just seeing if i can tone up a bit. i do have a bit of weight left to lose i know. i do have other problem areas eg my tummy but a: - its not toooo bad at the mo and b :- its not instantly visible to all. im too old to be wearing belly tops :rotflmao: slim
