Bikram Yoga: yea or nay

Anyone know anything about Bikram benifits? I went to a class last night and liked it. But when I was telling my roommate about it she said her yoga instructor advised against Bikrma altogether. I realize sweating to lose weight is dangerous (Bally's should be ashamed to sell those plastic sweat suits) but does it serve a different purpose here? The idea is that the heat helps make the muscles more pliable and the sweating is a good way to release toxings. We were encouraged to drink water often andn take breaks when ever we needed...plus they gave the standard "Yoga isn't a competition" schtick. So is it valid or just a (possibly dangerous) gimick?

Bikram Yoga

I gave Bikram yoga a try and I felt really good after class and for the following few days. As you were saying Bikram is well known for Hot yoga and there are several advantages doing it in this temperature. It is easier for your body to move all of its muscles, the body releases toxins and the stale air in your lungs is removed as well. I found it easier to concentrate in a hot temperature than in normal room temperature. As for your roommate's yoga instructor, maybe he/she wants you to join his/her club.

Along with eliminating toxins through sweating, you can intensify poses, due to the heat. For this, flexibility is a little easier to attain.

However, it can be very damaging if you take this too far or don't drink enough water. You should also be eating about 2 hours before a class.

I went to a few classes, but it wasn't the right style of yoga for me. I was uncomfortable with the heat and it seemed to over stretch/extend my muscles. I agree though, if you're doing that make sure to drink a lot of water before and after. I liked the sweating but found that I wasn't focusing as much on the breathing and meditation side.

I loved it! i became obsessed with going and tried to go as often as possible. It lost a lot of weight because of the calories you burn as well as the necessary increase in water that you have to adapt too. The other great thing about it is that, at least for me, I had to eat healthy to have a good session. If I ate bad, my whole body felt off and it just helped me really eat well during the day. I am all for it. Right now my schedule really doesn't work with the classes, but I am hoping to get back into it when I can.

PS. DONT OVER DO IT THE FIRST CLASS YOU TAKE!! It takes some getting used to.

I've only done it once, but I loved it and looking forward to going again. I feel great afterwards. Just make sure you bring plenty of water and a towel.

My Advice

Hi Everybody,

I have been practicing Yoga since 3 years. In the beginning I was not aware about the names of my Asanas but as my mother found that my body is very much flexible I got interested in it. And later I have performed various shows also. When I had considered myself as perfect in performing the Asanas I had started surfing to find out the accurate information. I would like to share with you one of the interesting sites which gives more valuable information on all forms of Yoga. Please for your remedy.
