Bike or treadmill?

I was wondering if anyone knew which kind of workout would be better....

I workout usually 50-60 minutes a day. There are two machines though.

A bike and a treadmill

Biking...about 15-17 mph
Treadmill (without incline)...5 mph

Which workout would typically be better?

For over a year I've been using the bike and I've lost 60 pounds. I weigh 160 pounds, 5'8" tall, and I'm 15.

Both of them are Nordictrack

I think with the speeds you mentioned, the bike would be the better option, as the speed on the treadmill isn't that much higher than walking pace. However, if you up the speeds on the treadmill you will burn more calories on that. The only thing is the bike puts alot less stress on your knees and ankles than the treadmill does, especially if the treadmill you use is low quality.

When I workout I use a combination of the bike and elliptical trainer and both put very little stress on the joints, and as most folks know that elliptical machine gives u a great workout.

If it were me, I would steer clear of the treadmill and stick with the bike. If you have access to an elliptical machine, you will get a better workout from that bad boy than the others, without joint stress too.

Bike over treadmill

I prefer a bike. You can't do this on a treadmill

adds more variety to a workout. I use a standard upright cycle in my garage with a wall unit. Makes for a creative workout!

My podiatrist said ideally you should do both, because you don't want to overuse the feet bones pedaling on the bike, for example. You shouldn't always do the same cardio workout.
