Big Question

Body Fat/Weight training/Cardio

I had recently started weight training in November. I lift twice a week exercising each muscle group only once a week. I also started supplimenting my diet with Whey protein. I have noticed muscle & strength gain within the last 2-3 months overall, which is great, but the main thing that is bothering me is my body fat percentage. Before I had started lifting, I had noticed over that last year that I had gained some body fat percentage, mainly because I had developed some really bad eating habits (junk, beer). I'm not fat. I'm 25 yrs old, 5'9" around 170. But over the course of the year, i noticed that my 6 six pack had turned into a 1 pack.:) Luckily, I changed those habits, so that I'm not putting on that type of bad weight anymore. However, like I had said, I started out my program in Nov........with this undesirable body fat. Now I am pretty sure that I haven't put any more significant fat on my body since I started lifting and supplementing with Whey protein, my educated guess is that the weight gain, and noticable size gain is muscle mass. But I want to get rid of this damn fat. The fat I had when I begun has been maintained with me, because I haven't created a calorie deficit. I still want to get a little bigger muscle wise.......but I want to lose the fat.

At this point, I was considering adding 3 days of moderate cardio, and possibly creating a slight deficit in my diet (while still maintaining a significant protein percentage). But I'm not sure if this will work. I hear alot that if you create any type of calorie deficit, then I can kiss any type of muscle gains away. So I'm not sure what avenue to take.

Hypethetically speaking........if it did work, would I only then need to stop the cardio once the fat has been shed off........and/or loose the calorie deficit, so that I can just lift like I'm doing now and still get muscle gain (assuming that doing this would maintain the desired body fat percentage), or is this all a pipe dream?

Yes I want to get bigger. But I want this little extra body fat percentage gone.......and fast..........because it bothers me everytime I look in the mirror. Can someone please advise me so that I can stop racking my brain? Thanks

Chris

You are on the right track. Drop the calories and add cardi - but make it HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) so that you don't lose much muscle when you do it. This is just like regular interval training, but taken to the extreem.

When you are at the point you want to be at, I would increase the calories, but I would keep doing the cardio. Maybe switch to moderate cardio for the other benefits that cardio gives you. Good luck!
