Beware of eDiets

I recently went onto the eDiets website to check out their programs. After deciding that I might be interested and starting to fill out the information, I realized that the cost of a membership of $11.96 per month had somehow been raised to $31.88....so before hitting the confirm button...I hit the back button to find out what I had accidently checked and/or was checked that I did not know about. As you go through, they have ads all through each page, which are already selected for you...for instance: Oprahs trainer....$2.99 week, etc. If you miss these and do not uncheck them...those costs will be added to your plan cost. Unfortunately I could not figure out where the extra charges were coming from, so I just decided to forget it and closed the browser...all without hitting the confirm button. They have now taken the $31.88 out of my account twice and after finding this out the second time and calling to cancel this, I was informed that there is a $25.00 charge for cancelling..which they immediately took out of my checking account...and that, even though I did NOT confirm my subscription to their service, they supposedly have in fine print somewhere on the page that if you hit the back button they will still process your order. Although after going through the process again as far as the credit card information page and reading the privacy policy and terms of agreement policy I have not been able to find this so called..."do not backup fine print". SO BEWARE....EVEN CHECKING THIS SITE OUT IS COSTLY.

Good grief! I've been there before, but I never EVER gave them any information as to where I lived or how to take any money away from me...

that's ridiculous, though! I'd sue them...unfortunatly, there was that stupid fine print, so they'd probably win.

What's the point of having a confirmation button if they're going to take money away from you anyways?! Good grief!

Now, will they send you back any money? Or is it to late? Grr!

You said you couldn't find that statement in the fine print? I would suggest writing them and requesting a copy by mail showing this. Also, when you write tell them that you are sending a copy of the request to your attorney along with your bank statements. You don't really have to. Just come up with a name for an attorney and type it in as copy to: It's amazing how that little statement can change their attitudes. I would start off by telling them that you are requesting a full refund since you did not use their services and then ask about the copy. I've had this problem with other sites, not eDiets. I did get everything back

i belonged to ediets a few months back and also got charged up the butt. i ended up cutting up my credit card and reporting it stolen. no more ediets charges on my credit card! i think its a ripoff anyway and had a horible time even navigating the site. i second the motion to STAY AWAY from that site!

If you used a credit card immediately contest all the charges per the instruction on the back of you bill and immediately notify your CC company that you have cancelled this service.

If you did it through your checking account (errr, bad idea) but notify your bank that you have cancelled this service.

Do put your complaint and demand for refund in writing to eDiets returned receipt.

Do not admit anything (like that there may be find print or that you agreed to anything). Just state what happened:

Dear Mr eDiet,

I considered purchasing your service online on 8/15/05, but changed my mind and left your site before confirming or otherwise agreeing to have any funds debitted from my account.

However on 10/01/05 I realized I was being charge for services and immediately brought your mistake to your attention at which point Mary Smith from your customer service department informed me that, to prevent you from continuously fraudulently debitting my account, I would have to pay a $25 fee [this sounds like extortion]. In order to mitigate [good attorney word] my furture damages I allowed this debit as I pursued my options.

However, consider this letter my demand that all funds debitted from my account be reimbursed immediately. Since I never agreed to or used your services your continued holding of my $89 is unreasonable and likely, criminal.

If my account is not fully refunded by November 15, 2005 for all debits, including any and all service and cancellation charges, I will be contacting an attorney.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Make sure to leave contact info. Good luck

man oh man!! I am sorry you had this problem! I also had problems with ediets in the past. it took 3 seperate requests, 1 by email and then 2 by regular mail to get the charges to stop!! I am surprised they still get any business at all. well good luck to you.

hehe, now ya know why i had to cut up my card and report it stolen. no card, no charges! easier than goin thru all that red tape.

Wow. I had no idea eDiets was this terrible. I'm glad I never looked into that site, I had been thinking about it. Someone should really get the word out about them. The ads for that site are everywhere!

Wow I'm sory that happened...I agree with 2bigfortexas just threaten them a little bit they might cave if not you tried at least....What a rip off and you didnt even get any service..I think cancellation fees are retarded....How much effort does it take to NOT service someone...

Your credit card company shold reverse these charges if you did not authorize them. Just talk to your cc company. They should take care of it.

Uh oh!!!

ive been receiving emails from the ediets newsletters with tips and articles and things for ages after hearing about it on the forum. I havent recieved any charges to my knowledge, but i never put in any details...could they still be charging me? The info they give is interesting, but im really worried now...should i unsubscribe????  :(

i was bouncing through e-diets and went through just short of the credit card info. I hit the back button to check something and there were pages and pages of magizines and trial programs and these didn't come up originally. So e-diets just find people with problems like weight and they market it for their own gain............

WOW, this is crazy! I can't believe they are charging you like that! I have considered using ediet in the past but now they'll never get my service or the service of anyone I know!

Thanks for the heads up.

ps. Good letter Red
