Best shape of your life after 30?

I'm 31, and I'm making it my goal to be in better shape than I was in back when I was 18. When I was 18, I ran my fastest mile, a 5:59. (That might be pretty slow compared to what many of you run, but it was an accomplishment for me.) A year later, I ran a 1:51 half-marathon. (Again, that's pretty slow compared to a lot of people, but I was proud of that.) Since that time, I've gotten slower and fatter. I never got to the point that I couldn't pass the Navy's physical standards for body fat, push-ups, sit-ups, or 1.5 mile run, but I certainly had gotten a lot worse physically over the course of a few years. I started improving a few years ago, both in terms of body composition and performance, and I'm probably now in almost as good of shape as I was near the end of college. Now, I'm hoping not only to get back to the shape I was back around high school graduation but actually improve beyond that. I'm sure it's possible, if for no other reason than it wasn't until my junior year of high school that I decided to work on physical fitness and join track; I never came close to my potential then. It will still take a lot of work to be better than I was when I was 18, but I think I can do it. I think I can get to the point that I can run faster than a 5:59 mile or a 1:51 half-marathon. (To be sure, I don't think I'll ever be as slim as I was at 18, but I really wouldn't want to be that scrawny either. The only muscle I had when I was 18 was calf muscle. Pretty much the rest of me was skeleton, skin, and a little gray matter up in the head. No fat anywhere, but almost no muscle anywhere either.)

Anyway, I'm not asking whether one can be in better shape at 31 or 32 than 18. I think the answer is an obvious yes, especially when one wasn't that spectacular at 18. But if there are some of you out there who in your late 20's, 30's, or even 40's managed to get yourself into the best shape of your life, I'd love to hear your experiences.

When I was in high school and into my 20's I worked out here and there. But didn't take it very seriously.
But once I found out my dad gave me his high cholesterol I refuse to go on a drug. That was 2 years ago. I went through a complete lifestyle change.

Now I'm 32 and am in better shape then ever. For the first time in my life I have defined abs. I was fooling around on the basketball court the other day and realized I could actually dunk a basketball. LOL
I've never been able to even touch the rim. I'm still amazed by how great I feel. I have more energy then ever before and since last year have not been embarrassed to take off my shirt in front of people.

If nothing else the energy level and my overall mood improvement is well worth the effort.

Plus I need the energy boost to chase around the 3 rugrats I have.

My movtivation came from my refusal to be on some cholesterol pill at such a young age. Now I'm to the point where I actually enjoy working out.

hope this is what you were looking for LOL

age is just a number man.

i`m in alot better shape at 38 than i was at say 25. age gives you wisdom use it.
31 is young be who you wanna be it`s more than possible:)

I'm there, bro. 36. But at 18 I was pretty much high eating taco bell every day, so it wasn't hard to beat.

I'm 43....

In my whole life, I've never lifted more, moved heavier weights, swam longer, ridden further on my bike or looked this trim. But either way, it really doesn't matter where you were before, we all live in the "here and now" and all we have is our future: make the most of it. At best, yesterday was just an interesting stat.

I am 46 will be 47 in August and in the best physical and mental shape of my entire life.

I am about three years from 50, dont make excuses, work hard and EARN the goals I personally seek.

I believed I could transform myself and did just that. Us old dudes ROCK! :)

ROCK ON!

BE all you can be and then some more.......!!!! :)

Best shape I was ever in as far as BF level, strength and size was when I was 39. I am 44 now and am 5 lbs of muscle and about 3% bodyfat away from being there again. Now, my hairline and amount of gray, that's a different story altogether.

LOL, hair is stupid anyway. I buzz mine off

My best shape was either when I was 29 at 183 and about 11% body fat (but no abs showing) but weaker versus now at 201 and a higher body fat (about 16%) but much stronger and with better endurance. Later this year after I have fully recovered from surgery and can get back some of the lost endurance and strength from my layoff and losing 15 - 20 more pounds (being in the hospital for 7 - 10 days helps with that) , I plan on being in the best shape of my life. Before age 50 (June 2009), I plan on doing a 70.3 Ironman and earning an Ironman tat (which will be my first tat).

And, I have a full head of hair, albeit about 1/4 are grey) as did my father when he passed at 70.

Agreed...anything is possible.

Gordie Howe was 52 when he played his last game in the NHL.

And Chris Chelios is still playing in the NHL at age 45.

Then, of course...........there's Jack LaLanne !

... and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention (again) my personal idol, Dick Hoyt, who, while being an incredible role model as a human, is also still cranking out blistering marathons and Hawaii Ironman Triathlons while collecting Social Security...

Team Hoyt

Talk about social security....this guy was 92 and ran the Toronto Marathon, setting a world record for his age group in the process.
