Best Running time.

Last night i decided i would go for a run the next morning because i want to get more cardio exercise. So I got up this morning at 5:30am for a run. I havn't been running since some time last year so i decided to time myself. I did about 4.5-5 kilometer's (don't know exactly the distance but it would be pretty close to that) and i ran it in 18:45 which i thought was pretty good for my first run of the year and im pretty confident i can bring it down to about 15mins if i run more regularly. I had about five 10 second walk brakes too.

I was just wondering what times other people get for around the same distance.

I don't do much consistent running (and little straight cardio work, period). So I'm probably a poor example, but I ran my first 5k last month at 18:10.

My times are horrible, lol! I am usually at 9 to 10 mins per mile, so a 5K would take me about 30 minutes. Good time on your parts guys!

Why do you think that would be so hard? It's only 3 and a half minutes less than my first run and i hadn't been running in like a year and i took breaks to walk. I don't thinks it's an impossible goal.

5k = over 6 x 800 metres.
A good 800 metre time for an average person is around 2.30.
2mins 30 x 6 = 15mins + the extra 200 metres. To get 15mins you would have to run each 800 in under 2.30.

What if it turns out i'm a natural runner and im not "average"
But i can see what you saying yeah. I'll have to get a pedometer (is that the one to measure distance?) and see how long the run actually is. 4.5 - 5k was just am estimate.

Natural Runners. In all honesty I'm not sure. I'm basing this off the fact that kids in my grade (9) run it in an average of 3 mins, so if you look at adults then it should theoretically drop. 2.30 might actually be generous, I'd say 2.45 would be more accurate. Even if you were natural it would take months of training.

You dont run 5k in 18:45 if you have to stop for walks, maybe 3k.

He'd have to be flying to make up for the walking breaks. Something is off in the calculations.

In any case, sounds like a very nice run for your first time back out. I'd probably die. I'm lucky to hit 2 miles in 17 minutes.

Walking breaks really don't take much time from your run. Jeff Galloway preaches this format in many of his books..

Anyway, I have run a mile in 5:35 minutes before, but my marathon was run at ~10 minute mile pace.

I am slower in my old age!

Nearly a full minute was used for walking. Either he was really moving for the rest of the time, or the time or distance is off.

In either case, I'm still impressed. Like I had said, I'd need to bring my cellphone, and probably be airlifted to the nearest hospital if I ran longer than 2 miles.

5k is 3.1 miles. If you haven't been running in a long time and you can come back and your average mile time is 6 minutes and 15 seconds (Actually a little shorter. Then that's weird. and if you stopped to walk for 10 seconds 5 times it'd really be more like 17:55. which is a pretty good time (at highschool level) for 5k. I gathered from my friend's cross coutnry races anyway.

I had a student teacher named Mr. Leon, you (markus leon) probably aren't related, but he supposedly is a really long distance runner (just thought i'd make the connection)

sub 6's take natural talent, long legs, or form--- in order to run 3 of them in a row. but it is the 4th one that will get ya. try to remember, if you can run a 5K in 18 min, that does not mean you can even make a 10k. Furthermore, amartizing the numbers is no indicator. Most runner never make double digit runs. Once you get beyond 60 minutes, NEW things begin to take place in the body. I don't know what they are, but certainly after 90 minutes fitness, at the core comes into play... sustained heart rate and all.

my thought on the walking rest is this--- your poor body never gets a chance to settle in... no pulse, no tempo,,, no chi.

sub 5's! takes all three

But hey! I'm just an oldie like rip, what do we know...hehehhehehe

wow, I got rather wordy there.. ha!

p.s. a fifteen flat would get you anywhere you wanted to go! 3 consecutive 5 minute miles!! I don;t know.. but I wonder what the world record is!!

wait I will look it up. Yep, you are all testosteroned up. but there is a 6 second cush for ya. I'm thinking your heart is not even developed enough yet, Adere was 29. Where is that Derwydon when we need her?

Adere Ties 5K World Record at Carlsbad 5000
CARLSBAD, Calif. - (April 13, 2003) - Under a breezy, sunny spring day, Ethiopia's Berhane Adere ran 14:54 to tie the 5K world road record here today at the 18th Carlsbad 5000

oh shoot, adere is a woman, and our poster is a male. I'm done with this one.

But I do wonder what happens in the body as we go beyond 60, 90, 120, 180 minutes. It is a trip to experience.
