Best running shoes for big feet?

From what I've been reading, proper running shoes make up a big part of how effective running is, but I've also heard it depends on your foot type/size.

Right now, I'm running in a pair of Nike Shox, size 14 (size 48 EU) and they seem to be working well enough, but...

Lately, I've been having bad bouts of shin splints that keep coming back, even after taking a few days break from running and trying again. I was hoping that it was just soreness from not running for awhile, but it's still here.

This has me super worried because I enjoy running, it's my primary form of physical activity, but the pain in my legs makes it impossible to get any work done.

Is it my shoe choice? Why am I getting shin splints? How can I fix it?

Its too hard to say the reason for you shin splints without knowing more information. Do you pronate supinate or are you neutral. What is your foot width etc?

The best thing you can do is go to a proper shoe shop and get fitted.

At a stab I would recommend New Balance

+1

Go get a fitting.

The best running shoe for your big feet would be the ones you pick out from and array of options suggested by a well known and reputed running store.

Any suggestions for the proper running store?

Would Foot Locker and Sports Edition suffice?

You lost me here.

The Foot Lockers around me are usually staffed by 15 year old kids..not sure how good their advice would be.

I second the vote for New Balance.

By running store we mean no foot locker, no champs sports, no big huge corporate sneaker store that doesn't just concentrate on running or triathletes.

Go to google maps and search for businesses in your area by using the search term of running or runner...look for review or find your local running clubs website...they might have a recommended store list.

You want a place that is going to tell you what kind of stride you have by observing your walking and running foot strikes. Most good stores will allow you an "around the block" trial of each running shoe you try on to let you get a feel for them, to see what you like and what you don't like. figure on trying on at least 3 pairs. When I got my current pair I tried on 6 different pairs. I found that as always Nike sucks, Reebok doesn't even exist and as usual the most comfortable pairs are new balance, saucony and brooks. Adidas was in there as well.

As for pronation and supination (under pronation) see the image:

Hmm, I think i might be underpronation, but I'm not sure. Is there anyway to do a test myself, or do I have to have someone else look and tell me which I am?

Well if you take the advice you've been given from us you will have someone tell you what you are when you go to a real running store.
I suppose you can tape yourself running on a treadmill if you are really desperate to not visit a running store.
