Best muscle building swimming technique?

Im 19 years old and a sports student at college, and looking to take swimming on as a regular activity. I know that swimmin is primarily a cardio workout and does tone the muscles up. However that question I want to ask is this: what swimming technique is best to building muscle to the full capability that swimming can do for your body? I know it's not going to build a great deal of muscle but still, I want to give it a go.
So I want to know If it would be better for me to do shorter distance and higher speed, or will it still no make that much difference to just swimming regular lengths?
Any replys will be massively appreciated, even if it isn't much :)
 
I don't believe swimming can build muscle but it's a great cardio/endurance builder.
