First off, fat does not 'turn in to muscle'. So, you are best to focus on one goal and then the other to maximize your results.

If you are trying to burn fat first, change your diet so you are in a caloric deficit of about 500-1000 Kcal/day. This includes the energy burned during workouts so, on these days you will have to consume more calories (probably in the form of protein).

Taking a fat-burner only serves to expedite the process by increasing the number of calories burned in a day. This may be beneficial to you, or it may not. Remenber, these are ergogenic aids, not miracle pills! They can help you reach your goals faster, but it is incumbent upon you to make the appropriate dietary changes!

Lastly, try not to get too caught up in the details. You have to get close to your desired caloric deficit every day, but that's it. This is not a perfect science, and we are not splitting the atom here. You just have to make sure that you are in a 500-1000Kcal deficit every 24hour period, through a combo of diet, exercise, and proper supplementation. If you maintain this, you will undoubtedly lose weight. Once you have reached a good bodyfat %, you can bring your calories up a bit and focus on building more mass. THis isn't to say that you won't build any mass while losing fat, it's just that your gains won't be as dramatic while in a calorie restricted state. Keep it up over the long term and you will succeed!

hey bryguy, does it matter where the calories come from? ie percentage carbs/protein. or is running a deficit all that matters? tia

You're creating a paradox.

to lose fat, you need a calorie deficit
to gain lean muscle mass, you need a calorie surplus

i.e. you can't have your cake, and eat it too. Do one, then then other. This is why you hear about bulking phases and cutting phases.

Only special, genetic freaks can both lose fat while gaining a decent amount fo muscle mass.

I would say i stay under 1500 cals every day and then run 2.5 miles everyday and work out every other day while taking hot rox is this doing good!!!!!

are you male or female as 1500 seems very low. Have you calculated your daily calorific needs yet if so just take around 400 calories off that figure and that is what you should be aiming for as i have a funny feeling you are not eating enough

Are you talking about Scott Steiner?

Not familiar with him, but there ahve been a few pro body builders that just have great genetics...genetic 'easy gainers'.

I've read a paper that said Lee Haney had an abnormally low myostatin level, and that's the hormone that tells your body to stop building muscle. So it was easy for him to stay anabolic, and he didn't gain fat that easily.

definitely not 'the norm'.

AS for 'fat turning into muscle'...that's bullshait. fat is fat...muscle is protein. unless yer Harry Potter, you can't turn one into the other.
to build muscle, you need enough calories left over from wha tyour body needs to live and maintain its current weight to build up the muscle. Again, you can't make something from nothing.

Fat is needed in a bulking diet, because fat helps maintain anabolism (especially saturated fat) as well as testosterone levels. its also calorie dense, so it makes it easier to get in the extra calories.

Still, 30-ish% of daily calories from fat is all you need.

So I'm a little confused. When you all talk about your calories per day intake, does this mean that say for example, my "assumed intake" should be around 2500 calories per day (for my height, weight and where I would like to be, this is just an example also keep in mind), I could easily eat however much I wanted and possibly take in 4000 calories in a day, but as long as I burn 1,500 calories (In the gym, etc.), I would be within my goal? I only ask because I'm very confused on the calculation of how many calories you should take in through meals and how many you should be burning through workouts. I guess simply asked..

I can eat what I want, but in order to be within my limits each day, I'd need to burn enough calories in the gym to make up for the extra calories I took in from the extra food?

when they talk about calories per day and how much you need to build or loose weight keep things simple. If in one day your body needs 4000 calories a day to maintain your weight because you are working out and what not, then to loose weight, you want to decrease the amount of calories you intake by 500 to 1000 based on the amount you need to maintain your weight,
4000 - 500 or 1000 would leave you at 3000 or 3500 calories a day that you should be consuming. if you want to build, add 500 to 100 calories to your daily amount of calories.

If you feel that you burn 1500 calories in your workout every day and so all you do is eat 1500 calories you will most likely be starving yourself, causing your body to store fat, among all the other negatives starving yourself brings. the reason being is that your body is consistantly buring calories and so you need to take into account all your calories throughout the day and not just those burned at the gym.
