benefits of exercise

I was thinking maybe it'd be a good idea to start this thread to let folk know exactly how they'll be benefiting by doing particular exercises. If anyone is very into a particular one please add your thoughts about what it does for you. I'd really like to know what all my swimming and cycling does for my body but I'm not entirely sure. Does anyone know a website that I can find out from?

I haven't spent much time at it - but this site...

has some really good descriptions of various exercise methods and their benefits..

I have been thinking about cycling but were those seats always so small lol. Im thinking of getting a mountain style bike. I like the road bikes but out here in the sticks the road goes from concrete to dirt and rock very quickly. ahhh welll just pondering

thats exactly the kind of website I've been after maleficent so thanks a lot for pointing it out!

hillbillylee yeah the prospect of cycling somewhere and have your bum hanging over the seat isn't attractive. I wish I could cycle in the dark but alas this cannot be done.

That sounds like a great idea, now I only have to find a horse! haha:)
I love horses, but, alas, have never really been around them.

You don`t have to find a horse, just find a school or something... some place where you can take lessons! That`s pretty much enough!

Regular exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. People who lead an active life are less likely to get ill and more likely to live longer. Exercise not only makes you physically fitter, it also improves your mental health and general sense of wellbeing..

Exercise can reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. Every year in the UK, around 53,000 people die from stroke and 94,000 from coronary heart disease. Inactive people have almost double the risk of dying from heart disease compared with people who are active. So if you don't do any exercise at all, even doing a little more physical activity – for example, walking each day – can help reduce your risk of these conditions.

Exercise can both help prevent and treat mental illness. Some studies suggest that regular physical activity is as effective for treating depression as talking treatments or medicines, with fewer side-effects than medicines. You may also benefit from exercise if you have anxiety-related disorders, such as phobias, panic attacks or stress.

Thanks
