Beginning Runner: How do you get past the mental blocks?

Be gentle...I'm a new runner -- 36 year old female. I have never run before in my LIFE!

I have started running with 2 other people: a coach and a younger female who is also starting out.

My problem is mental--I know it is. I can run about 2 miles, but it's very tough. At some points my mind will start thinking "I have to stop" and I can't get it out of my head. All I want to do at that point is stop. I try to think of other things, but it's screaming at me. I need some advice!

How do you manage it?

Thanks!

One of the easiest ways is an iPod. I can't stand running without music, because it gets very boring - FAST.

I live on the beach, so what I do is switch up the run paths frequently. I don't like running on the boardwalk all the time because it's typically just a straight path down and back. I like to incorporate turns and run by things that look neat.

Not sure what else you can do, but that's a start. Keep up the good work!

Start a log to document your progress. Once you see it, you will want to better it. I use but there are others, including this forum.

Also, I'm guessing your coach has you at a speed that you can hold a conversation. If so, converse!
