Sport Beer... Just how bad is it?

Sport Fitness
Just how bad is beer for you as far as trimming fat and building muscle? I have no doubt that my diet and workout regimen will net me results. What I am concerned about is I like Beer. I do not consider myself an alcoholic, but I do enjoy about 2 cans of light beer a night (occasionally a 3rd, occasionally). I VERY rarely have a night where I binge. (special occasions maybe)

I account for the calories I take in from the beer in my diet.

My big question is.... does the alcohol have a negative effect other than the empty calories?

I need to know this. I have heard it mentioned that it prevents this and does that.

Whats the real scoop?

If you are already accounting for the fat and calories in the beer, I would say the only otther thing is that alcohol dehydrates you and you need to take in a bit of extra water.

Two cans a night is a lot. I would personally cut it out all together and maybe just drink when your with your buddies. If you're serious about working out I think thats what you should do. One of my buddies had a six pack and than went to live on residence at his university. Because of all his drinking hes lost it completly and he has this weird think layer of fat over his abs now.

The term beer belly isn't just made up. The fat your body accumlates from beer is one of the hardest to get rid of, and looks really bad. That's just my two cents, im not saying cut it out all together, but just have it once in a while when your with buddies. If it's tough carry around a 1.5L of bottle with you everywhere you go. The more water your drink the more your body wants more than any other liquid. That's what I do and I find myself filling it up several times a day.

I drink beer almost every night. Usually about a six pack a night. But otherwise, I eat right, and I work out hard. I have had no problems gaining muscle. Right now I'm doing a cutting phase, and so far I'm losing weight at the rate I expected, while still having beer at night. I drink Miller Light, which has 95 calories and 3.2 carbs per 12 oz. A lot of other light beers have as much as 7 carbs per can. So if your gonna drink the beer, I'd say go with the miller light, and do everything else you do as far as eating and workout out perfect. You should be fine. Just stay away from mixed drinks and hard alcohol. That **** has a ton of calories, sugar, and carbs.

You would see results a lot faster if you didn't drink that much

Right on.

One thing you need to consider is how important rest and quality sleep are both to losing weight and gaining muscle, as well as a ton of other aspects of your overall health. Although alcohol may help you GET to sleep, it does interfere big time with you getting quality sleep, the kind necessary for recovery, muscle growth, and weight loss.

Besides that, light beer is nasty. If you're gonna drink beer, for God's sake be a man and drink real beer. :D

i DRINK BEER OCASSIONALLY AND IT DOES NOT SET ME BACK.....IF I KNOW I WANT TO DRINK SOME BEERS THEN I GO AHEAD AND SAY WELL I USUALLY EAT 1200 CALS A DAY BUT TODAY I WILL DRINK A FEW BEERS AND STILL STAY UNDER 2000 AND I AM FINE, IT DOESNT SET ME BACK AT ALL

How do you know it doesnt set you back? Please don't try to promote alcohol on a fitness site. I agree its ok once in a while to have fun and relax, but just dont promote it when everyone here is hopefully trying to get healthier and reach their goals.

lol - I have to agree with you there!

xmkatx, he was hardly promoting alcohol. I also drink beer once a week and I don't feel that it sets me back either (whether it does or not is a different matter, obviously!) Maybe you took his post the wrong way because he had CAPS LOCK on by mistake? ;)

I have to agree; if you're gonna' drink some beer...drink something real-Chimay, Rolling Rock, Guiness, Mickeys, Sopporro, Red Stripe, etc

While drinking every night isn't the best thing if you're trying to gain lean muscle, the weekend fun isn't going to destroy what you're working towards...remember, everything in moderation.

notice of revocation of independence,

12. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all, it is lager. From November 1st only proper British Bitter will be referred to as "beer", and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as "Lager". The substances formerly known as "American Beer" will henceforth be referred to as "Near-Frozen Knat's Urine", with the exception of the product of the American Budweiser company whose product will be referred to as "Weak Near-Frozen Knat's Urine". This will allow true Budweiser (as manufactured for the last 1000 years in Pilsen, Czech Republic) to be sold without risk of confusion.

mehehe :D

on a serious not though alcohol in moderation has significant health benefits which should not be overlooked. A beer or a glass of wine a day won't be detrimental to fitness and is probably beneficial to your health.

Yeah, well most people don't know what one drink is and just get drunk, even if they try to drink one drink, so I think it should be overlooked with some people, because they keep that in mind, and when they need to quit, they use that as an excuse... :(

Yeah, I know how that is. Sometimes I tell myself that I'm only gonna have one or two drinks, but after I have those one or two, all I want is more, and I usually end up drinking until my normal bed time, or until I'm drunk. Whichever comes first. I'm not trying to promote alcohol, all I'm saying is that drinking beer on a daily basis hasn't had any negative effects on my muscle building, or fat loss regimine. But thats just me. I happen to have good genes, so I don't gain fat very quickly or easily. It might be different for somebody else. All I can do is tell my personal experience.

i agree that stopping the beer would be best. but it's really a matter of priorities like everything else, if you like it enough then enjoy yourself and have your 2 beers a night. but IMO it does negatively affect fitness, despite the "one drink a day is good for you" studies. & i can definitely say this from personal experience. :)

I am fully aware that if I didn't have my Saturday night beers, my progress towards my goals may well be a little quicker. I don't really care though because I enjoy my Saturday beers and I'm still making progress every week, albeit slightly slower that it may be otherwise.

Thanks for the Article Evo...

That's what I feared, that there was more to it than just the calories. I have to re-evaluate just how important those couple of beers are. I'm going to cut back to just weekends.

Once again, thanks to all for the input.

nice choice, good luck

Oh, I almost forgot. I would much rather a nice dark beer as opposed to a lite beer as well, but I didn't want to sacrifice the calories. If I cut back to weekends only, I can now enjoy what I like....

Rogue Dead Guy Ale.
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
Sam Smith Taddy Proter
OR
McSorleys Irish Stout

LoL... I'm making myself very THIRSTY!!!!
