So if you havent followed my diary thread here:http://weight-loss.fitness.com/t/54632/redxs-weight-loss-journey

Well I have been doing a fast walk/jog on treadmil for 20 minutes and 30 minutes on elliptical each day. I've lost 24 pounds in 1 month which is awesome.

My question is, should i start doing any weight lifting or continue my same routine since its working so great??

if you have the time to add that on to your routine, than 100% yes. Muscle is your furnace. The more muscle you have the faster you can burn calories.

The short answer, yes. Everyone, unless your doctor says otherwise, should weight lift or do some form of resistance training 2-3 days per week.

Thanks for the replies. Im going to the gym shortly and plan to start doing weigh training every other day. Maybe do some weight training for 20 minutes then do 20 or 30 minutes on elliptical instead of 45 minutes of just treadmil/ellipitcal. Is that a good plan on my weight training days?

Depending on what you're looking to do with weights, might want to give yourself a little more time. At home, I have two dedicated days where I start out with my big muscles (quads, pecs, back) doing compound lifting (squats, presses, rows), and then work down to targeting specific and smaller muscles (hint: bigger muscles use more energy, which is why you want to start with them). Each session is about an hour. You can cut time a little by targeting areas/muscle groups on a given day, but if you're at a gym, you'll want to factor how long the wait is for equipment, depending on the time of day.

I'd recommend finding at least a book, or spending a couple bucks on a trainer session or two. You'll gain a lot of knowledge from both in terms of what works best for you.

At the beginning, 20 minutes might be OK to get you through 1 or 2 sets of each exercise (remember that you want to cover the WHOLE body). After a while, 20 mins probably won't be enough to get through a good routine. Since you're doing lots of cardio, I would say that you could slowly increase the time spent on weight training on your weight training days, and if you have to, decrease the time spent on cardio on those days.

There is a good post on one of our other forums on training for fat loss: http://training.fitness.com/weight-loss/training-fat-loss-51064.html
