I lost about 10 pounds probably 6 or 7 months ago now. I still have another 10 or so to go, but its time I start feeling good about myself. I'm taking steps to doing that (positive thinking, seeing a counselor, spending time doing things that I want to do, etc.). The next step I'd like to take is learning how to dress in more trendy, flattering clothes. My clothes fit ok, not great, but they're all so boring. But there are so many things out there to choose from, how do I go about deciding what is worth spending my money on. I want things that make me look and feel great! Any ideas?

My guilty pleasure show is What Not To Wear on TLC - it's really helpful for learning what's appropriate for your body type...

One of the key points on that show.. and on other dress me up make over shows... Dress the body you currently have - not where you think you will end up or want to end up.. AND DO NOT OBSESS OVER SIZE (all caps to emphasize) Take 3 sizes into the dressing room with you - the size you THINK you are, the size larger and the size smaller -and go with what looks best.

A tailor can makean OK outfit look outstanding... very few people can wear off the rack clothes - dragging pants look sloppy - tailoring is a small cost with ahuge impact...

Tim Gunn (I have a thread here somewhere on it - use the search feature)_ insists that a well dressed woman only needs 10 elements in her wardrobe...

and above all -No outfit looks good unless your foundation garments fit properly - start with a good fitting bra - get measured...

I think that good, solid "neutrals" are important in any wardrobe. I'm a guy obviously, so things I think are a little easier and slack for me... I would say try to find a nice pair of darker jeans that fit you nicely and that you enjoy wearing. Darker jeans are easy to dress up with a jacket and a cute top, or they can just be dark jeans and a t-shirt, depending...

Usually black, brown, tweed, khaki, and of course jeans are considered neutrals... I'm sure there are a few others... Neutrals are things that go with just about anything color wise.

I would reserve the color "popping" for the tops, shoes, jewelry, etc... It is of course all up to you but shelling out more dough for something that will function as a staple in your wardrobe isn't necessarily a bad thing because you can do more with it.

This is all pretty much what Stacey and Clinton have to say. If you ever catch their show (the one that Mal mentioned) I think it would help out a lot. They have lots of useful advice and definitely aren't talking out of their asses... Tim Gunn is also good I've heard but I honestly don't pay as much attention to him (I don't get Bravo on my TV)....

Good luck and remember to remain positive and dress the body you have now. :)

I love when you included "positive thinking" as one ingredient to achieving you desired body weight :D

Thanks. It's become really important as a way for me to keep myself motivated. If I don't like myself for whatever reason, the weight-loss goals go out the window within seconds.

Sammyboy,
Those tips are really helpful. Thank you. I don't have TV so I don't know the shows you guys are talking about, but maybe I'll try to watch it if I'm ever at a place where there is one.

Never hurts to go to a store and just try things on... maybe bring someone you trust with you too. For me, I love to go shopping with my sister (I'm a guy). She will tell me if something doesn't look that great and thankfully she has a good eye, being a graphic design major, so she helps me out a lot.

I tend to stick with natural type colors though. Couldn't survive without my light brown corduroys.
