basic exercise

hiya ive gotta go all out now ive gained half a stone in 2 weeks and well i dont wanna gain any more i want to lose it so what im looking for is a basic work out. at the moment only walk most days 20 minutes to work and 20 minute home from work. im looking for something thats say 10-15mins in the morning and then perhaps something thats 30 mins in the evening and to work on this untill i feel i can do more. i also intend to go to water aerobics once a week which may become twice a week if i can afford it.

Sorry, I'd help if I could but I don't know work out routines to give you. My advice is always just move. All movement burns calories. I just don't know what to tell you past that other than look around the site as I'm sure there are suggestions for workouts here.
 
For starters, I'd look at your diet if you're gaining weight. You can't out exercise poor diet.

Secondly... it's hard to give you programming advice without knowing more about you. Your age, weight, equipment availability, etc.
 
i believe its mainly the lack of exercise thats the problem.

im 22 and 15st and a half. havent got equipment available unless games on wii count lol.
 
Actually, sure it does..all movement..walking..moving with the wii..it all adds up. Steve has it right with diet too.
 
what game do you think is best on the wii then?

and diet may be part of it but i know exercise is my weak point. i dont eat massive amounts
 
See, your statement tells me what I think the problem is. You said you don't eat massive amounts..but that doesn't matter. It is what you eat that does. We don't become overweight if we aren't overeating calorie-wise.

For a week, keep a food diary. Write down every single thing you eat and be honest here. It is the only way you can see since we always overestimate our calorie intake. It goes much farther than exercise can.

This is the major point that I think you're overlooking. Your definition of "massive amounts" doesn't really matter. If you're gaining at the rate you say you're gaining... chances are very high that you're eating too much. It doesn't have to be massive amounts.

At the end of the day... exercise plays a much smaller role in lose weight than does proper nutrition. Let's face it... most folks are only going to burn 5-10 calories per minute of exercise.

The more unfit and/or fat you are, the lower on the scale you're going to be.

60 x 7.5 = 450 calories

A 160 lb active person (I forget what you said you weigh) is likely to have a maintenance of 2250 calories. So 450 calories accounts for only 20% of your total energy expenditure.

It helps, sure.

But you need to focus your attention on the things that matter most. I definitely don't have a problem with you wanting to kick the exercise up a few notches. I simply want to make sure you're seeing the big picture here.

And to add even more objectivity... pick up a food scale. They're relatively cheap. I'm not saying you have to get in the habit of weighing every morsel of energy that passes your lips for the rest of your life.

But doing so for at least a little while... a month or so... can be quite eye opening.
