Baseball Fitness Plan?

Hey there, just needing some help into what I need to do to get the best results in my workout and diet routine.

I'm currently 15 years old and play Catcher for my High School Baseball team. I'm about 5 ft. 3 inches (I know, I'm short) and only weigh around 112 pounds. I'm pretty athletic and semi-built. It's my sophomore year and I really want to get ready for my Junior and Senior year in high school.

If you could help me in what workouts I should do, and what my diet should be, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
S2BMLB

Hey,
I'd try and incorporate some HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) into your workout as well as some Plyometrics training. It'll also probably be beneficial to you if you do some strength training as well, start with compound lifts, such as the squat, deadlift and bench press.

You want to be eating a good amount of carbs and protein to support your diet, try and get as much of your daily foods from healthy, natural things rather than processed and junky style foods. Eggs, lean meat, chicken, wholemeal pasta, brown rice, oily fish are all good examples of this. A whey protein supplement may also be beneficial to you.

Hope this helps,

George

I'm going to sound a bit vague here... baseball training is definitely not my strong point! Does your high school have a workout program available? Talk to the coaches and see if there is a program that they can give you for what you'd be expected to do once you get into junior and senior years. Not to say that this would be the complete story of how to train, but it gives you a starting point for training and a headstart if there are any specific strength requirements that there may be to get onto the team. If you're interested in playing college ball in the future... why not contact your local college team and see if you can get hold of their training program... Chances are, they may have a program for catcher-specific training. You could start working on a modified version of the program and work towards being able to do the full program by the end of high-school.

Also, do your research. There are books out there on sport-specific training that you could find either at your high school library or your local library... check them out and see if they have periodized training programs.

Nutrition may be a little tougher... basically, eat clean as much as possible! As was said above, eat lots of fruits and veggies, try to only have whole grains rather than processed grains, stick with the lean protein (turkey, fish, chicken, eggs). Stay away from soda, junk food, sweets, etc... only have them once in a while.

These are pretty general answers, so if you have more specific questions, ask away!
