Weight-Loss Basal Metabolic Rate?

Alright, so I've heard two things on how to figure out how many calories to eat.

1) guess how many calories you eat on average, subtract 500 to lose a lb a week.
2) calculate your basal metabolic rate and subtract 500.

So, I think they both make sense, but they can't both be right.

I am eating about 1,600 - 1,800 cals a day, losing about 2 lbs a week, but when I calculate my BMR I usually get about 1800, so wouldn't that mean I am supposed to be eating something like 1,300? That seems drastic.

I think I'll just stick with what's working right now and when it stops I'll drop some more calories. I guess I just don't understand exactly, but I suppose it's not terribly important yet. 1,800 seems the magic number right now.

Do you guys have any advice or experiences on figuring out how many calories to eat?

If you're exercising as well, and you're using a calculator that doesn't add that into the equation, you have to multiply the number.

I believe moderate exercise is x1.55

The calculations are meant for creating a starting point for those who are struggling or just have no idea where to start. The best thing anyone can do is to record their current intake (before making any nutritional changes), figure out their daily average calorie intake, then go from there. If you have no idea where you're starting, it's very hard to figure out what to do.

Don't worry about the calculations, as they are just estimates. If you have already found a daily intake that helps you lose 2 lbs per week, stick with it!
