Basal Metabolic Rate

I'm 5'3, roughly 240 lbs, and fifteen years of age.

If my calculations are correct, then according to the BMR formula on , I should be burning 1924.6 calories a day, even when I'm simply "sitting on my butt all day."

In order to maintain my current weight, if I had little or no exercise, I would need to eat 2309.52 calories.

So basically, if I eat less than 2000 calories a day and exercise daily, I'll lose weight?

Is this correct? Because if that's the case, I'm highly encouraged. I know that I can manage 2000 calories or less a day and manage at least 20 minutes of exercise, even if it's just walking around my neighborhood.

yep - it's all about the math with a little fluctuation thrown in.

There are other calculators out there:

but that pretty much sums it up :) Exciting isn't it?
:D

Incredibly. And not only is it exciting-- it's reassuring.
Before I always thought, "Oh, I'm too lazy; I have no self control. I'll never lose the weight."

These numbers work for me, though.

Thanks for the other links. I'll take a look.

It totally is managable, and you can do it.

You might need to experament some though. Track your results, and if you aren't happy with how things are going, either add a little more exercise, or eat a little less. You'll find it's easy to find places to cut another 100 calories (Ordering a Regular Roast Beef Sandwich instead of the Large at Arby's, etc)

hey hun don't be lazy! a little exercise won't hurt, and just in case you "Cheat" and end up eating a wee more than 2000 calories worth of food, at least exercise will burn it off, if not, more, thus leading to faster weight lost!

Um, how am I being lazy?

The "sitting on my butt" thing was simply quoting that website. In other words, I don't HAVE to do anything to burn a certain number of calories a day.

But if you read everything I wrote, I distinctly said that I was going to exercise.

Right now, twenty minutes around my neighborhood is hard for me, and I've been walking at least 20 minutes (2 laps) around my neighborhood each day since I've started.

I haven't been consuming under 2000 calories. I've basically been consuming around / under
1500 calories.

So I'm not sure where you got the idea that I'm being LAZY from.

You have the right idea...

Consume more calories than you use and you gain weight.

Consume less calories than you need and you lose weight.

Throw in a bit of exercise so that the amount of calories you are using goes up and allows you to eat more without going over the amount you are using so easily.

Something tells me that Captainbea just didn't read your whole post. Those of us who read it don't think you're lazy, and want to encourage you.

It's been a couple of days now, how are things going?

I'm not sure how much you'd be interested, but I'd recommend reading the Hacker's Diet at . It's free and provides some great tools to help you in your journey. It doesn't focus on food restrictions or anything like that. It's just an eat less/exercise more deal with some good tools to help.

Thanks for the link, Llamabean. It seems interesting and most of it seems to be common sense stuff.

I'm not on a diet, but I'm counting my calories and trying to get in 20 minutes of exercise a day.

Eventually, I'll move up to 30 minutes, then 45, then an hour. I just have to get to a point where I don't feel exhausted.

Exactly :) Also try experimenting with different kinds of exercise. I can only do 5 minutes on a bike, and a half hour on a treadmill just about kills me, but I can do an hour with fairly low pain on an elliptical.
