Sport bananas

Sport Fitness
I was watching a basketball game and everytime players would go in they would eat a piece of banana, like during every timeout, they eat a banana before they go in the game. why?

I'm guessing sugar for quick energy. Bananas are full of natural sugar.

Bananas = energy

That does not mean eat 100 of them a day, they have a high GI. I usually have 1 a day before workout. If you are playing a sport like that though, where you run a lot, the bananas would be ok.

Usually Musa Paradisiaca (bananas) - have a low gi (under the 55 mark)
one could argue they are natures perfect fruit. full of potassium,lutein, and alpha-carotene aswell as many other nutrients.

They are best used after a workout.

Though during a workout is fine, if your a person with a stomach can handle it. Because of its simple sugar makeup it should not waste much energy being processed by the stomach.
But again it depends on the person, i don't like eating while exercising though i know some people who could eat a burger during their workout and be fine.

Wouldn't banana's Pre workout followed by Dextrose post workout be much better?

Seeing as dextrose restores muscle glycogen and banana's just give an energy boost and restore the liver glycogen

The reason they are best post workout is because they allow one to refill some glycogen stores without the risk of getting a "downer" from to much insulin secretion that other simple sugars usually can give. Pre workout with a banana is fine, but most people want a simple sugar that will quickly enter the blood stream like dextrose. In a sense a banana does not give most people the "high" that other simple sugars can do such as Dextrose.

And The body decides how and where to store the Glycogen, what you eat (talking about sugars here) does not dictate this.

In conclusion, i would recommend Dex pre and banana post. However, always make sure your workout is one hour or less when ingesting something like dex directly prior to the event.

simple

simple answer, bananas prevent cramps, thats why basketball use it along with many track runners. I had one of the best runners in the nation and one of the best runners in the state on my basketball team and they ate bananas durin games after games and espeically before their track meets and such. I'm sure they know what they are doing

^^Yep, bananas are good anti-cramp food. :D We used to also have them at our basketball games and actually worked really well. Good stuff..
