Bad chest pains

Iand 21 and want to be a ble to run a mile in under 8 minutes but I can't run very far without feeling really bad pains in my chest like a heart attack and I am unable to breath. I am healthy and active, but when I try intense stuff I have to quit before it really gets bad.

What are some ways to gradually work around that? I am completely new at running.

I suggest you consult a Doctor. If your getting chest pains you should really get checked out.

Can you discribe the pain - quality, where it is located, does it radiate, on a scale of one to ten how bad is it, does it go away with rest, what provokes it, just running or anything else, what is your past medical history - everything not just cardiac, are you on any med's over the counter and herbal too plz, allergies???? sorry for the list but it doesn't mean its cardiac related it could be respiratory or abdominal too.. If you want a medical opinion answer the questions and I'll help point you in the right dirextion. You should seek medical help but it may be non-emergent and you need to arm yourself with enough info to get a qiuick diagnosis with out fooling around with a host of unneccessary tests!! If you'd like that is.

try interval training and taking it slowly.

as Jen said, consult your doc.

Have you ever smoked???

You need to judge if your going too fast. you gotta slow down before it hurts, not after its started.

Running is acctually one of the hardest things for someone new to fitness, You may have better luck starting with a cross trainer untill you build up your fitness.

If you are new to running then why are you trying to do a mile in 8 minutes. Build it up you are probably putting to much strain on your heart or it could also be heart-burn..OK OK don't laugh but on my Monday run after eating a bit more on the weekend I also get a very bad pain around chest area and its gas I think.....

Check it out at the docs to be safe but take it easy with running just see what you do at normal pace in 8 minutes and over four weeks try to build it up to a mile.....

Good luck!

okay i'm gonna step in again, this could one of several things and not neccessarily about not being used to running. I ts a medical issue and a doc needs to be consulted. Again answer my questions hell pm if you want but this is what i am trained for the info is neccessary to pinpoint the area that the problem stems from. It could be nothing but it could be something big too. chest pain is not something to fool around with. Also is there anything else surrounding the episodes or anyother time for that matter that is abnormal for you. anything even just a 'feeling' that is abnormal to your norm??? Just trying to keep things on track, figure out the problem first then start trying to fix it..

If your new to running you shouldnt be doing a 8min mi. Way too intense for a newbie, IMO. I've been running a month now my best mile was 9min 8sec. and I did 2 miles 19min 34sec. I was amped tho. Havent improved those result after 2weeks.

Think about it? When I wrestled for high school (4years ago)I did my mile in 8min 40sec. I was wearing sweats, 2 shirts, and a hoody. To top that the other wrestlers made fun of me.

Well it must not be that bad or the guys in the hospital .. since there has been no replies to the orginal thread!! good luck hope your ok!

I agree with the post'ers above. you should take your running workouts slowly when your new to it. IF your feeling pain consult a doctor.

Thank you so much for your insight. Yes I know A mile in 8 minutes is difficult...That s my goal for a year from now for my black belt test. I am a swimmer and developed these pains when I swam hard for long distances, but I was in very good shape. My Dad is a doctor and he told me to just work through it and he gave me an inhaler. Sorry it took so long! :) I have been out of the country most of the summer.
